Altcoin is cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin, also based on cryptography and blockchain. These altcoins were created after Bitcoin. The best known are LTC, ETH, Dash and the like. There are also tokens.
Tokens do not have their own network and usually "lie" to different Blockchain cryptocurrency. They work by so-called smart contracts on another platform.

Alternative coin to bitcoin kind of looks discriminatory. Giving a priority name to bitcoin and categorizing others as a whole makes it sounds weird. Anyway, bitcoin is the first coin, the most valuable, and the coin with the highest market capitalization, so there is no doubt to that. Very soon a potential altcoin will overthrow bitcoin Grin

Even if you do not understand what Altcoins are, you are probably familiar with Bitcoin'om. Once you begin to explore the cryptocurrency market deeper, you will be surprised to learn that there are actually hundreds of cryptocurrencies, better known as Altcoins (an alternative to Bitcoin). Altcoins are an integral part of the cryptocurrency world, but they are not for everyone. Beginners often have a huge number of questions about altcoins, and this guide is a brief overview of altcoins that will help beginners decide whether to invest in altcoins and use them as part of a cryptocurrency investment portfolio.
The word “Aldon” is short for “Bitcoin alternative”, and they called all cryptocurrency except for bitcoin. Altcoins are called an alternative to bitcoin, as most altcoins hope to either replace bitcoin or improve at least one of the bitcoin parameters.
There are hundreds of altcoins, for example, the Coinmarketcap website lists more than 1000 altcoins . Every day there are more and more altcoins. Most altcoins are not much more than just bitcoin clones, while changing only 1-2 minor characteristics, such as the speed of the transaction of coins in the network, the method of coin distribution, or mining algorithm. Most of these coins do not live long. The only exception is litecoin, because It was created as one of the first altcoins. Compared to Bitcoin, litecoin has a different mining algorithm and a much larger number of coins. For this reason the litecoin established themselves as the silver to gold “out bitcoins s”.

Any AltCoin is a cryptocurrency, except for great bitcoin.  Bitcoin as the primary source (ancestor), and everything else that appeared later combine under the General term of Alton. Sometimes it is convenient, because you do not need to list all these names, but you can say in one word.

An Altcoin to my understanding is any other coin that isn't Bitcoin, so every coin that came after like Ethereum or Tron would be considered an Altcoin. So in simplified terms it is any Alternate Cryptocurrency to Bitcoin. Most of these Altcoins rely heavily on the trade value of their predecessor Bitcoin.

DEFINITION of 'Altcoin'
Altcoins are the alternative cryptocurrencies launched after the success of Bitcoin. Generally, they project themselves as better substitutes to Bitcoin. The success of Bitcoin as the first peer-to-peer digital currency paved the way for many to follow. Many altcoins are trying to target any perceived limitations that Bitcoin has and come up with newer versions with competitive advantages. As the term 'altcoins' means all cryptocurrencies which are not Bitcoin, there are hundreds of altcoins.

If you want to know more, you can search on Google.i hope you will find the answer.

Altcoin is the generic name for cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin. Most of the Altcoin are modified versions of Bitcoin. Altcoin was born after the success of Bitcoin in 2009.

In short, Altcoin is an alternative to Bitcoin because it improves and addresses the bugs in Bitcoin's protocol. This is the currency created for the purpose of replacing Bitcoin. The success of the Bitcoin P2P peer-to-peer digital network is the precursor to the creation of today's Altcoin.

Altcoin is a combination of two words: "Alt" and "coin". Alt à alternative, coin is a coin, or Altcoin means coin replacement and cover for all types of cryptocurrency today.

Their goal was to overcome all the technical limitations that bitcoin has. At the beginning of December 2017, there are more than a thousand altcoys in the world.
And now... it's more about just running an ICO to make scam a shitload of cryptocurrency out of people who are desperate for some of that 1000%+ ROI that some of the early crypto-currency adopters got. Undecided

AltCoin recipe:
1. Copy code of SomeCoin™
2. Rename coin via Find/Replace to NewCoin™
3. Run ICO - get sent ETH/BTC from loads of suckers (added bonus if you run scam bounty campaigns)
4. Profit (then run away)

What is AltCoin?
Before we will understand more about altcoin, we must know the extension of altcoin itself. The length of Altcoin is alternativecoin which means coin-coin other than bitcoin. The purpose of this altcoin is to cover the weakness of bitcoin is the limitation of the amount of bitcoin in circulation that is only about 22 million coins only, then altcoin was made. Until now there are about 150 altcoin on the market with varying prices, there are even altcoin prices that exceed the bitcoin price itself either 2x fold, 3x fold, even 10x fold. But a lot of altcoins are very small.
Altcoin almost the same as Bitcoin, the price can not be predicted to jump so quickly, can also go down very swiftly. The amount of Altcoin in circulation can also increase without anyone being able to control it. These factors make the Altcoin's future bright. Altcoin can also be an alternative for us to collect bitcoin, after collected we can exchange it with bitcoin

An altcoin is any digital cryptocurrency similar to Bitcoin. ... This approach is relatively easy to carry out because Bitcoin is a free, open source platform. When an altcoin forks at the blockchain level, an alternate system of consensus rules must be used and the coin will have an entirely different distributed ledger

Most alt coins branch from BTC software such as LTC, BCH and Dash while others, like ETH, create a brand new blockchain. On top of that, you have coins and tokens...
We have a guide that compares all three, so check it out  Smiley

Despite the disadvantages of altcoins, however, there is a new type more lazy than it: "Forks."
Since Bitcoin Cash "BCH" has occurred and the emergence of a large number of these currencies using the names of the famous coins to scam in a way to offend the cryptocurrency.

Generally, not all altcoins are bad. For example, currencies such as Havven, Monero, and ETH offer an alternative to using Bitcoin

In general, Altcoins bill themselves as a better alternative to Bitcoin, though to date none have surpassed Bitcoin. The term “altcoin” was created by the combing of the words alt, or alternative, and coin, signifying a cryptocurrency.
