I use eligius as it allows port 80 access which works being behind a firewall for part of the day.  Haven't tried ssh tunneling yet.

Do any of the other pools offer port 80 access?

I use BTCMine.  Why does it get no love?

My newbie experience over the last few weeks (midwest US location):

Deepbit is expensive, but has fast payout and is reliable
Slush seems to work best for me in terms of yield, stats are a bit basic
.LC is free but slow, functionality still a bit rough. Maybe later.
Guild is "free" but whines about donations, feels slow and did not yield as much as expected

Try each for a few days and measure how much they pay out. The bigger your sample size, the more accurate the results.

BitcoinPool has no fees. I've liked them so far.

Eligius also has no fees, but has the advantage of being the easiest to set up. No account creation necessary, just set up your mining script with your wallet # as username and start mining.

I'm with bitcoinpool. It's not the most stable place, going down like a yoyo it seems. But I'm getting paid. And that's what matters

MtRed, Deepbit and BTC Guild are the ones I have distributed.

I'm fairly new to this as well, but I use Mineco.in and NoFeeMining.com.   They are two new pools that just started recently.

For a newbie I would say bitcoins.lc is best as it has no fees. Deepbit is popular but they have a 3% fee - higher than anyone else.

In my mind, Deepbit.

You could also use Slush pool as a starter.
