The bitcoin price movement downwards is just testing the market's support level and I think it may have reached the bottom price already but it could also be the whales who keeps on manipulating the market, setting bull traps. The upcoming Chinese New Year could also be a factor wherein the Chinese People greatly affects the market volatility before Feb 16.

Hasn't the market support level been being tested for a long time already? And hasn't the Chinese New Year preppers been made weeks ago? I think it's been long enough already, and the price has been going down for different reasons. There are many factors which make the price drop. There still has numerous FUDs, and I think the recent bans have something to do with the price going down because Facebook has decided to ban crypto-related promotions.

Well we're over the bans and the fuds for now it seems. And i'm not sure if the chinese newyear celebrants would have that much effect since their market is obviously highly regulated now. I'm not seeing any serious dumps anymore though that's me crossing my fingers there.

Yeah, it is dropping day by day and a lot of us are already worried with their invested, my mom invested with bitcoin when bitcoin price is at $17k, so she already lost almost half of her invesment. I don't know what is really happening, I just know that most of us sell their bitcoin already because of panic selling.

Everything, the media, the whales, the people who are panic selling. Can;t you see that lately the media only hates on Bitcoin?

not only media but also social medias like ig and facebook has recently reported that they start banning crypto related ads mostly ico 's but i think that event could Not totally affect the price of bitcoin. i believe the real reason why bitcoins drop so much its because of the high fees lately therfor most people switch out for a while into some other low fees coins like litecoin and etherium in order for them to continue thier service and online transactions.

However Chinese New year has not come yet, and the fall of the market slowed down and even stopped. BTC was falling due to bad news from Asia (bans, etc).

Yes and bitcoin got a good support from the investors, they are holding bitcoin even in panic situation when most of the inexperience are selling because they cannot afford pressure. They are thinking that they will lose everything they have. But i think bitcoin is already reached to its bottom and now we are just waiting for the price to start increasing again. Hope we will see the price rising again in next few days.

I think it is just panik. Many people who got in at 10K and above es that in the last weeks bitcoin know only one direction. Now they try to save as much of their money as they can.
Lets be honest, a bitcoin for 19K like we saw it in December, that is overvaluated. Maybe in a few years that will be a fair price.

It's funny that the price was almost 20000 USD with the network being slow and bottlenecked, fees reaching over 20USD for a single transaction and completely no solutions being implemented.
Now we have segwit, lightning transactions being tested, much less transactions in the mempool, cost of a transaction being down to 4USD if you don't have segwit set up and only 2 USD with segwit. So the network has improved and the price is below 50% of ATH. Crazy!

Absolutely brilliant point!!!!

It again goes to show what BS the whales or institutions are doing to manipulate the entire market.

Co-ordinated dumping my whales or financial institutions?
I do agree if this is probably an organized dumping. Of course it takes a lot of people to do the same thing so it can make the market become weak. Nowadays many speculations are evolving, ranging from restricted regulation, fud to bitcoin bubble, until crypto which is no longer interesting for big investor to enter the market.

This is beyond sad!!!

When people actually take time to understand why the crypto-market was founded and the freedom it stood for.

Little by little we are losing grip of such freedom.
Handing it right back into the control of the FED and Regulators.

It's not too late for everyone to rise up. Especially those with weak hands right now.

WHAT IS CAUSING BITCOIN TO DROP?

AND NO IT'S NOT JUST FUD!!
people are selling it for less than they should. people want to sell quick so are accepting shit prices.

Not just fud, but obviously fud has a big part in this if you ask me. Starting from chinese and korean crackdowns, to the misinterpreted indian illegalization of bitcoin. If you got in just recently, and a lot of people got in just recently, news like this would certainly shake your nerves especially if you see how it affects the market.

It's crazy for anyone who has just gotten in!!

Right now DIGIXDAO is the only crypto in the top 100 beating the downtrend!!

Definitely a traumatic experience for many right now!

WHAT IS CAUSING BITCOIN TO DROP?

AND NO IT'S NOT JUST FUD!!

Whales dumping, and also FUD is an undeniable part of the reason why bitcoin is dropping at the moment. It's because of the combination of chinese mining bans, facebook bans on crypto related ads, korea ban rumors, as well as now, India ban rumors that is making the situation what it is right now.

Without these, bitcoin is still probably going to be thriving and more pumps would be flooding in at the moment.

Usually when these sort of news initially gets released, the markets will respond by dumping and price will drop. When the sanity returns to the market, the price will recover to an acceptable level and potentially even get pumped. This has been the case time and time again.

Even though everyone knows about the India FUD - it hasn't seemed to reverse the price. Instead it is tanking even faster!! How, do we get everyone to HODL. No one is listening to anyone.

This is one of the reasons we need an open community. To defeat the Whales causing this!!!

We are nearly at $8000 - we need to HODL!!!!

The market is dropping because people are taking their profit instead of holding.  When the price starts to fall people should take their profit and not be greedy.  And hold on day after day wringing their hands while the price crashes.    And nobody should buy on a rise.

Bitcoin is dipping right now. In my opinion and just my thought, the reason for this fall is the bad news created by media with regards to bitcoin. One is Facebook banning cryptocurrency ad and just recently, The government of India is planning also to ban cryptocurrency. But I think this is just the correction going on right now.

the drop of price of bitcoin because some dump there bitcoin and some hesitate do buy because of the price its unstable for going up
Many still doesn't understand how the market works and they keep failing themselves about this system, if only they see the big potential then they won't panic ans sell what they are already holding, bitcoin is another type of currency/investment where the supply and demand still followed, for sure big whales are very much happy with the current situation as they can buy more and hold.

We know the answer to this already....but does everyone else?

What do Whales do to the market and how???

I think the reason why bitcoin and all altcoins are now droping is because of false news about india making cryptocurrency illegal or banned. that is not actually true and it is just a misunderstanding by those people who reported it. but the problem is it spreads fear uncertainty and doubts to weak handed people and of course whenever they hear bad news they are always in rush to get out of the market.
Something I thinking as like you. People now in hesitation, sometimes bitcoin price will high, sometimes price low. Even sometimes go for very fast forward.Actually That was not the case, But it has happened. So now its cover the old Abnormal rise.

That's how volatile bitcoin looks like. Its market price will go down and up in a drastic way. Maybe people are dumping it since FUDing is always everywhere you can see. One factor that also causes these are whales (individual / group) selling their bitcoin in volume.

trend shift towards ethereum because there because of lack of visionary leadership

It's temporary. Not long ago the same thing was happening with Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash. Bitcoin was expensive to send and Roger and his friends started to promote BCH as the new king, the successor of BTC. A lot of people sold Bitcoin and bought their coin you could see it happening for days and nothing happened. BCH is still not the king, BTC survived and continued to go upwards.

Most of what is happening is very easily explained. I really don't understand why people are panicking. You have wallstreet trying as hard as they can to make BTC seem like a self fulfilling prophecy. They have provided massive liquidity for the early investors, created futures contracts and have bought and now are exiting to possibly buy lower they want to kill this thing that allows people to go around them. Don't forget the whole BCC thing (I'm holding a few bags of that). Don't forget this random exchange news and the fact that the news in general have never been positive about it.

Investors' attitudes toward high-risk assets will change as soon as the cryptocurrency market cracks. This can have an impact on Bitcoin prices.

Who remembers Jamie Dimon calling bitcoin a scam, then subsequently it dropped?
I do.
Who remembers the allegations, post the incident that JP.Morgan Chase was attempting to buy in?
I do.
Who is aware that JPMorgan Chase has a Github repository for a Cryptocoin named Quorum, based on Ethereum?
I am.
Who now believes the huge rise in Bitcoin after Jamie Dimon, CEO of JP.Morgan Chase made those scam claims, was solely down to global Bank investments?
I am starting to.
Who now thinks the banks made themselves the biggest players in the game (whales), so they could destroy decentralised currency reputation, and issue their own centralised Cryptocurrencies to keep in control of the worlds finances, people and financial trust in the system?
I do.

They are demonstrating a power, mass dumps, followed by, FUD on Bitcoin, however, every news article about the blockchain is positive, why?
Type Bitcoin in google right now it’s a sea of shit.
Type Blockchain however, well, let’s just say a future bed of roses.
Yet it’s the same technology.

They seek to destroy Bitcoin to replace it with their own cryptocurrencies.
The positive comments on Blockchain are so they can market their coins as Blockchain coins.
We may be about to see the very end of Bitcoin, however, I hope, I really do that we have an ace up our sleeves.
Don’t let the tyrants re-establish control.

That's actually not a bad explanation. I know it's far fetched and we have no real proof of it happening but it makes sense.
I'd add that JP isn't the only one that would benefit from manipulating the news to scare people away from Bitcoin. There are other countries like Russia that are working on their own cryptocurrency. Remember that funds are limited. If people invest in Bitcoin they won't have much left to put into their centralized coin.

Bitcoin :open immutable decentralized global fair

Concerted timed attack of news by scam of tether (symbol: USDT) with Bitfinex, fearful news of regulatory crackdowns, and typical manipulation or FUD attacks from DCG (Digital Currency Group) companies. Altcoins are known to be "scamcoins" for a reason - they will die relative deaths and Bitcoin will always prevail.

All these attacks will be fruitless and have only providing an amazing buying opportunity today - in 5 years time, BTC's price will be at least more than 4 times current level.

Bitcoin's lightning network is emerging where fees will be tiny and cross-chain atomic swaps for decentralized exchange.

Governments and laws are controlled by the central banks. Bitcoin is an anti-establishment revolution that has already solidified itself worldwide.

Bitcoin cannot be controlled. It cannot be banned. It cannot be made illegal. And conversely it cannot be legalized. It just simply is. And people can always use it.

Those trying to undermine and manipulate bitcoin stem from the central bank system around the world;
-the central banks dictate policy to all the operating big banks around the world and have essentially tried their best to ban bitcoin related transactions for more than four years straight, ever since 2013, and have failed at stopping bitcoin's growth, adoption, and popularity
-the central banks fund efforts to undermine bitcoin, providing plenty of capital and liquidity to private companies and venture backed groups such as Digital Currency Group (they own Coinbase, GDAX, Kraken, Bitpay, and media outlet Coindesk) and also Roger Ver/Bitmain to undermine and break the bitcoin protocol and/or manipulate trade

Above are just small examples.

First, educate yourself and then others. Please checkout the link to the bitcointalk post in my signature titled: How to teach Bitcoin to a 7 year old.

Bitcoin is a secure, decentralized, trustless and open system which cannot be banned nor controlled.

Bitcoin is ultimate store of value and its popularity has strengthened over time and maximizes value compared to any other altcoin...why?:
If it can be shutdown, and have assets frozen by a bank or government, there would be no value
If it wasn't secure, there would be no value.
If it wasn't immutable, there would be no value.
If it wasn't globally distributed, there would be no value.
If it wasn't so strong, open-source decentralized and unstoppable, there would be no value.
If it wasn't so scarce, there would be no value.
If it was easy to spam transactions, there would be no value
If it required a central 3rd party to function, there would be no value
If it was stopped after all major banks on Earth banned in 2013 to today, there would be no value. (say "bitcoin" when transacting and watch the block of the transaction. simple fix=never mention "bitcoin").
If it didn't have the history of 8+ years (and still no hacker can exploit bitcoin blockchain), there would be no value
Bitcoin is on the verge of lightning network release rendering altcoins as only backup plan options if not dead.
If it was exactly like fiat and only did transactions, there would be no value.

Bitcoin's value is worth hundreds of billions USD today. Altcoins however are scams, weak, pyramid schemes not offering these values.

Bitcoin has all the characteristics needed combined to hold the most value and increasing more than any other financial-asset option coming from the manipulated fiat central-banking debt-system. (more than stocks, more than houses, more than gold)

I think it is because of the previous spike in the market last year during the last leg of the year and since bitcoin is decentralized it is greatly affected by the supply and demand factors in the market which the result is what we are seeing now in the market as crashing in terms of its value.

Perhaps there are more people selling BTCs than people buying BTCs?
This is why they call it a market, because the price can go down just as it can go up.

This is the only correct answer.

Many years ago I read a theoretical example demonstrating that only buyers and sellers can affect price. It was along the lines of "What would happen to the stock price if Intel announced lousy earnings on a Saturday morning? Answer: nothing, because the markets are closed".

BTC is going down because the sellers are being more aggressive than the buyers at the moment. Nothing more, nothing less. You can certainly speculate on what might be motivating them, but that's a whole different ballgame and largely academic.

If we analyze the last 2 months market I think it`s not possible to conclude that sellers are more than the buyers! Instead very huge amount of people have entered into the crypto market after the second half of december. Moreover I don`t think they sell at that moment - all players entered on 12K-14K BTCUSD shouldn`t get out just after 2-4 weeks with 30% loss (exc. they are really stupid - very rare cases). The possible reasons BTC to fall at the time thousand new players came buying are

1) Market manipulation (bots)
2) Really big players cashing out

We saw dramatical declines nowadays. It is volatile and everyday we can see new fake news, old news or speculating news. I dont look for reasons anymore. Whales are playing like a toy. But good days will come soon!

Regulators could have the biggest impact on Bitcoin and Cryptos prices as multiple countries have either implemented some regulations or have discussed plans to limit them. If the regulations become too burdensome they could negatively impact the usage and therefore price of Cryptos.

It's not so much about the panic selling it's about the fact that utility tokens are controlled by companies. These companies are regulated,
they have to answer to some form of regulation. Therefore these utility tokens no matter how convenient, helpful or fancy are a backdoor in for regulators.
Regulation for this industry is bad. If some of you don't know IRS are already trying to tax people millions even if they have only made a few thousand (simply because of the number of times they have traded).

WHAT IS CAUSING BITCOIN TO DROP?

AND NO IT'S NOT JUST FUD!!

We all know that bitcoin has a number of supply. Developers of created the number of supply of bitcoin to balance the demand.  So this is the case., if bitcoin demand is high,  the price of bitcoin is starting to rise but when bitcoin supply is high thats the time that it will continuesly fall down especially if a lot of people are selling their bitcoins.

Co-ordinated dumping my whales or financial institutions?

You have got it. By the way of the complicity of governments and mainstream media who together have started to attack Bitcoin in many different ways, such as the BS Indian news of today.

If there is an coordinated dumping from the whales then can we assume that they are the one who brought mislead information in the community about the news on India? anyway I saw a lot of articles/news about explaining that India will embrace the Blockchain technology so let's just wait a few hours or days then the market will recover after this FUD's.

Embracing blockchain technology is NOT the same as embracing Bitcoin.  Why is this concept so hard for people to understand?  This tells me that many of the people on the forum have never really thought about what purpose Bitcoin serves.  They're just buying it because it's new and kewl, oh, and it's going to change the world!  Gag me.

Bitcoin is dumping because it´s gonna be replaced by ETH soon...

BTC is more useless and broken recently, being shut down even by steam... Lighting network sounds cool but is not coming tomorrow and even with that it will be just a payment coin.

In other hand, second generation tokens are getting more and more useful...there´s so many things going on ETH network this days and more are planned to come in the following months...including nework improvements with Go Network, POS, etc.... ETH, at this big dip, it´s not so far of it´s ATH... many signals channels in telegram are recommending to switch to ETH... The time that "Altcoins" stop being called ALT and COINS is coming sooner than you think...

IMO it is technical, the last major high was around around 7500-7800 depending upon which exchange your looking at and the spike high or where the daily candle closed at.

The 200 day moving average is also right at that level, so IMO (and speculation) is that will be the support area.  We will know in a day or so...

THE QUESTION IS...WHAT CAN WE ALL DO ABOUT IT???

I think the only thing we can do about now is to buy Bitcoin while its on a dip. If all those whales dump it there are also people who are just waiting for a dip to buy more coins for their portfolio. I'm a hodler so I'll just be here waiting for all this issues to subside and I believe that Bitcoin and other altcoins will eventually reach all time high again.

It is so painful to see because what so many of us forget is the significance of Bitcoin.
We will never experience this kind of FREEDOM again, if regulators enter into the market and take over!
We deserve the freedom to hold our own money, trade it freely and anonymously without being watched.
This isn't what Satoshi envisioned.
We need to regain control by becoming one large anonymous group!!!

There could be a lot of possible reason why do we have this dip right now.
But one of the greatest cause will be the panic selling especially to those newcomers.
We cant deny the fact that there are a lot of investors out there who doesnt want to see their investment lost.
That is why they will instantly sell whenever they see bitcoins value fall.

Whether this is a whale team game that makes the price drop, and later they can buy back when bitcoin prices are so cheap, surely this is a really good question to answer !!

A good question that no one can answer right. It hurts to see bitcoin on this kind of situation but we must be strong enough to control our emotion and remain positive despite of losses. Can really bitcoin go higher? Yes of course but I think it will take time, just buy more and be patience.

At least you can hold your bitcoin and keep it from panic with this condition, at least in the next few months we can see the price of bitcoin back 15000 dollars, or 12000 dollars, this is just a moment for everyone to buy so many bitcoin with the current price is very cheap to buy it !!

I guess this month will be amazing to bitcoin and all alts as well. if you could imagine the price of bitcoin will worth 100k compare it to the price right now. Time will tell that bitcoin will be going to pump hard.

It may be because of the government. It is hard to belive it but I think is true. We had to expected this, that sooner or later governments will step in and actually make something against bitcoin to take him down. Of course they can fully close it or bann it but at least they can get the price very low. We have seen that they are capable of this and the price dropped more than 2000$ in just a few days. Think what could happen on a period of 1 year if they continue like that. People are selling because they are afraid that the price will go very low and no one can say thats not possible.

I think one of the reasons why BTC is dropping is as a result of a lot of threats from government of different countries. For example in my country, the legislatives have been shouting they wanted to have a sitting on regulating the activities of cryptocurrecy. Honestly I don't know their problems, and I will not be surprise to find many of these people investing in BTC.  If people succumb to this threat, it might lead to decrease investing in BTC hence, there will be a drop.

Bitcoin is notoriously volatile, and its worth is predicted to still shift erratically.

Its rise in price has additionally led to increasing amounts of interest in different digital currencies, like ethereum, litecoin and ripple xrp, and so on, as investors and other individuals currently desire to speculate in the direction of digital currencies.

Governments are attacking cryptocurrencies, pump and dump groups are manipulating, rumours about fraud are spread, big shots are giving negative advise, exchanges getting hacked and robbed. All this happens in just a few days, so it's not just coincidental but carefully planned to bring crypto down. That's the reason why the price has dropped to 9K. But once this is over and investors start buying again, the price will increase.

$1 to $1000 in 7 years   Angry

That's GIANT PONZI SCHEME or FRAUD SCHEME

My troll meter is burning up. We're running out of scale here!  Grin Grin

I believe that the South Korean ban issue has already been resolved but the price is still going down, I am thinking that facebook ICO advertising ban is contributing to this massive in prices.

OK, allow me to explain. The top of the chart is full of newbies who jumped on the train late, at 15-17k USD or higher. Some of those guys sold when they read the fud news, some sooner, some later, most at a loss. For many inexperienced people it's a disaster especially that some of them had taken loans to invest. They aren't thinking straight after a loss like that and instead of buying back lower they get scared or angry or depressed and give up.
That's one of the main reasons why the price is going down with fake news and is not bouncing back up.

There are some reasons due to which i think BTC is dropping, its being manipulated by some whales which are only 40% BTC,there unexpected move cause BTC value to move up & down. Also there are some rumors  that its being centralized by govt, causing its value to down, temporary ban in china and south korea also affecting its value. Also there are are some investors who bought BTC recently at some high price and now observing its downward behavoir, they are withdrawing their investments to avoid further loss, basically BTC is long term investment, due to high supply in market demand is low pushing price to go downward.Another healthy change is expected in 2018 around $20k-$25k.Lets see.
I believe that the South Korean ban issue has already been resolved but the price is still going down, I am thinking that facebook ICO advertising ban is contributing to this massive in prices.
I have to disagree with the Facebook banning of ICO that contributed to this massive dumping. But you are correct about the South Korean ban, its been resolved already more than a week ago and we even see the price recovered after that fake news.

There was a news today that in Indian budget they are planning to ban Cryptos etc. This FUD may cause this dumping...

But again,  all credit card bans, then FUD one after another, dropping BTC  all can't be coincidence.  Somewhere something bad is really being planned against BTC.
I think the news coming from India added fuel to the fire. But I'm still not sold on it. There are really big reasons about this crash that is not clear to all of us as of the moment. If I'm a whale, I wouldn't do a coordinate dump with others. I would rather hold. It doesn't make any sense at all to do that.

I think the massive change in hashrate is the chinese bans and whatever the hell it is I don't even know what to call it. If you want to be rich turn those miners back on since now is a great opportunity especially those who bought s9 miners. Those will blaze through the hashes igniting the block chain like a drag car taking off the starting line snorting and growling like the beast it is while the tired set fire to the ground in a blaze of glory and ecstasy.
It's not even a problem. Bitcoin is still way up from when I got mine. I enjoyed that spike but now it is over and back to normal oh wait.... Normal was $3000 now its $9000... still in the green. Time to buy. $$$ I got diamond eyes baby!! $_$

OK I found something interesting. There was a massive dropped rate in global hash as reported by one member:

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.29401312

The massive dropped rate coincides with the price of bitcoin dropping as well. This could be something that other experts here nee to look at. I'm still trying to dissect the situation. But again others who have more knowledge can chime in as well. Are there any connections? Is this Bitmain's way to manipulate the price in their favor?
