I don't think the best tech is going to win (at least in the next 5 years), because when people talk about crypto they always bring BTC on the table, so new people invest in it. Only when the masses learn about the advantages of other cryptos them it might win over BTC.

We all know that short term the market behaves irrationally and long-term it behaves like a weighing machine, but what does that mean for crypto? What is going to win out?

If we think the best tech will win out, doesn't that mean that some altcoins are positioned much better than BTC going forward?

The best will always win. But not always in terms of technology I guess. It is just one factor, a big one at that. But look at Bitcoin, it is not totally anonymous and decentralized. If I am not mistaken, there are some other out there in the crypto world that offer better anonymity and better decentralization. But Bitcoin is still on top. And also, altcoins do have various uses.

In my head, I've divided the coin market into two catagories, coins that are trying to be currency, and coins with a purpose.  Bitcoin, IMO, has such a lead in the currency catagory, I don't see anything competing, at least not for a long time.  As for coins trying to become platforms and perform functions, I think etherium has a big lead, but I could see a competing coin closing the gap there or even overtaking it based on technology.
