If this is concerning SEO, yes keywords are important, but quality backlinks will have a larger impact on your ranking.

Keyword density refers to how often a word appears in a written text. For example if we look at a webpage, The more often a keyword is used + the lesser other words used = Higher keyword density.

Simply put:


Task: Write a 500 word essay about "Food"

Keyword: Salt.

Keyword density: 20.

This means "salt" is to appear not less than 20 times throughout your 500-word essay. You must make "salt" flow naturally in your essay i.e don't make it obvious that you are intentionally inputting "salt" in your words.

Keywords are important for SEO (search engine optimization) - when someone types "salt" in Google or Bing, your article will show up in page 1 or page 2 because it has so many "salt" in it.
