And for god's sake keep them clean. Heatsinks clogged with dust prevent air from flowing across the whole board, and overtemp kills things faster.

For those lurking, here is better answer for recommended S9 temp ranges.
What I was calling "chassis" temperature is called PCB in the S9 manual. its the controller board.
"PCB temperature below 80°C,and chip temperature below 115°C."

Btw how do u check antminer chasis temp?
Easy way is download and run Awesome miner or any of the other monitoring software you can find on these forums.
Or learn something for yourself, use python or your favorite scripting language to read the antminer api. Script is here https://github.com/dfoderick/Mining

Do not open the machine during the warranty period!
I just shake machines gently when I first get them and listen for rattling, you need to make sure nothing came loose during shipping. The controller thing does rattle on top but that's normal.
Once the machine is running I try not to touch it. Monitor hash and temps. If you run them real hot I guess they could loosen up and drop off but temp would jump and machine would probably stop hashing. Then do the shake check again whenever you need to clean out the dust.
I live in cool dry climate and have 5 of them in garage so far. My ventilation is not ideal so I am looking to improve. But in winter I don't care because they heat my home.

I am confused. U mean temp (Chip 2) on the antminer miner status webpage is around 70 degrees? Thats a very good number if so. Mine is 70-85 degrees on different miners.

Check these forums. Some say S9 might only last a few months then need repair, other people say they are still running from first batch in 2016.
I have only owned 5 S9's operating for a few months without any problem. Use good power supply and keep the air flowing. Check the heat sinks to make sure they do not fall off.

Aftermarket prices are going to rise about Feb or March 2018 when higher price S9 hit the street? Why wouldn't you mine and then sell them? You will probably get the same $$$.
That's not how the market works. You can't predict the price of the miner two months from now.One thing people usually don't think about is that if you own an S9 today, you are paying $5k for it. It doesn't matter how much you paid for it, you can trade it today for $5k, so that's your opportunity cost.
I can't predict future price but I can protect myself on the downside by accumulating the payouts slowly by mining.
I get your point about opportunity cost. The way I look at it is that I am leveraged to the price of bitcoin but in the most conservative way while I do carry a large risk by mining instead of just selling the unopened boxes for a one time profit.

That's not how the market works. You can't predict the price of the miner two months from now.One thing people usually don't think about is that if you own an S9 today, you are paying $5k for it. It doesn't matter how much you paid for it, you can trade it today for $5k, so that's your opportunity cost.
As for "lifespan" mine lasted 4 days before a board crapped out. This is not uncommon according to what I've been reading around here.

There is no way to answer your question. I have some batch 1 miners still going strong, and I have some December batch miners already going in for RMA. It really is luck of the draw.

Good question and perhaps the answer is to diversify if you have the space/cooling/airflow to get the miners up. With that inventory, I'd probably sell half and use the funds to put into my top cryptocurrencies as 2018 is going to be one hell of a show

I should be getting 20 S9's come January and I'm trying to figure out if I should mine with them or sell them on eBay for some profits. Part of that decision is based how much problems these machines will give me. Can someone share some experiences? Thanks
