I thought it was ethers before the hack. It was on the way to follow bitcoin and could have reached a 3 billion usd market cap. But now there's no "best" altcoin because no altcoin has proven to be worthy to be called the best.

I would say litecoin, it's ok for mining, old school alt, great network, and charts say to hold for time being...

I think we can not say for now what is the best altcoin these year.. but i am relaying in coinmarketcap which is you can see almost start of the altcoin and what is the top 20 altcoin so i think the best altcoin are 4 dogecoin ethereum litecoin and monero those altcoin i think the best..
For me CBX still the best for most crypto currency which is very cheap right now and i think better to buy right now because cbx will be rise again back this year.. they will release new project for cbx..

This question or clost to it comes up quite often and the bottom line is that there is no best altcoin, or not one that anyone knows off yet. A lot of people will tell you the coins they hold and hope to be the next best thing but as it stands bitcoin is the only coin worth having, Everything else is just speculation that it will become as good as bitcoin.
If you fancy mining then if i where you take your own advice and just start mining the most profitable coin you can. After mining that you will soon come up with an answer for yourself.

i can say that lite will be rising up after the btc stop moving up or you can also try to buy some adz and rbies they have strong future goals but thats only my personal opinion better to check the alt section and review their future goal either long term investment or have fun with pump and dump coin mate. good luck. I stopped using the term "altcoin" years ago. For me the term "altcoin" stands for clones of the Bitcoin code. I believe Nxt is the best, but that is just me.
