I suggest you buy a hybrid. Its in the middle of electric and internal combustion engines and is eventually something happens you wont be hurt that much.Take germany for example , they are banning disel powered cars slowly and eventually they would die... And not to even mention you would save alot on gas money with a hybrid. Lexus Lh are good options and Toyota CHR as well
Even though everyone is crazy about Tesla right now, I will remain a Mercedes fan. it's status and art in every detail 8 
Electric cars are the future so why not consider about buying an Tesla which has two models in the $40K price range and it provides more better features than other popular mechanical automobiles are giving. Importantly you can save fuel costs. 
we will wait couple more years for tesla to come here...biggest problems are car services.

If you are interested in coupe cars, I recommend japanese cars
Like Nissan Z/skyline, Toyota supra/Gt86, Mazda, subaru

The best coupe for under $ 50k, in my opinion, is the Lexus RC 300 F Sport. And as for SUVs, I would go for Mazda CX-5 Signature.

There is a lot of differences between a coupe and an SUV. How big is your family? How many people will you on average have in the car? I would pick the size so that everybody is comfortable. And instead of buying a completely new car I would choose one which is 6-12 months old, they are like new but a bit cheaper.
