Bitcoin has lead in shopping at the moment, but that will change as consumer matures. Then the alternative currencies will begin to ride the rails of the infrastructure that was built for bitcoin. Very few consumers understood the internet's potential, same is true for cryptocurrency.
Basically, I feel that some cryptocurrencies will be specialized more towards the commodity side, while others - do other things. So what we might end up with are niche brands that fill the demands of various needs. This is analogous to automobiles that come in SUV, sports models, pickup, ect.. They all have combustion engines, four wheels, and a body, but also they are individual in nature.
The protocol is the automobile, and the altcoins the numerous makes and models. Best? ... only time will tell.

for now litecoin and dogecoin is the best, more merchand accept it than new altcoin like eth, dao, lisk.
Shopping = Bitcoin. Hands down.
Holding = a more complex situation. I'd also include BTC in this, but here's my thought process when considering a coin: "What does this coin do that others, including BTC, don't do?" That rules out hundreds of altcoins instantly. What are you left with? Coins that deal with storage (SC, MAID, etc.), platforms (ETH), and privacy (XMR).
I only named a few, and you can see which ones I like by my mentioning of them. My favorite is Monero.
To me it makes no sense to buy a coin for holding that is functionally equivalent to BTC...there's no real need for such since you can already do the same thing with BTC. Look for what is functionally different and serves a useful purpose. There aren't many of those.

Shopping? Bitcoin. Good luck trying to buy anything with the other altcoins. There are places that take DOGE, I've heard, but you can't buy anything really good. Don't know about Dash--I really like it as a coin but as a currency it's just awful. And then there's Litecoin. I've never owned it, but some shops take it.
I think all the coins are useful for just holding on to. That's how I see most of crypto--digital gold, digital silver. You don't spend either one of those, do you? Not anymore. I wouldn't hold onto the shittier coins, like Yobit has an abundance of. That's a sure way to lose money.

well, I think the best option to holding is Ether and Bitcoin because for a short time will happen a rising price for this coin and we can make a something with this coin not only to hold but making an investment too.
For shopping, I prefer to use fiat money because is easy to use on our environment. all store,merchant and seller it always accepts this.
If the recent price rises doesn't convince you ,I don't know what will.The answer is quite obvious ,Bitcoins.
