www.cointrader.net is a good exchange for newbies, and they answer emails and phone calls.

what is the best place for trading for newbies?

Do you mean an exchange, or member to member trades?

If you mean an exchange, I'd recommend coinedup. It deals in smaller volumes than some of the bigger exchanges, but it's relatively easy to get started. Mine some coins that it lists, log in with a gmail account and start trading. All you need to do is deposit coins from your wallet into your coinedup wallet addresses. There's one for every coin listed.

+1

I just recently (today) opened an account and purchased altcoins with BTC through coinedup. Round trip took about 20-30 min from buying the btc on another exchange to transferring the altcoins out of coinedup. Vary good service

Actually I purchased BTC @ virwox transferred to coinedup then exchanged BTC for LTC since the price was cheaper to exchange LTC/MEOW vs BTC/MEOW.

Although the above is not what I would suggest if you want to trade as in buy long and sell short (like stock/forex markets). For that use BTC-e metatrader4 platform.
