What is the best way to buy and hold Alt. coins, I live in U.S.?

Buy on Kraken and hold in an opensource wallet where you hold your private keys. IF you plan to buy more it would be wise to also buy a hardware wallet.

Binance is a good option https://www.binance.us/en, if you are looking for wide selection of good altcoins. If youre planning to keep your altcoins for longterm never leave your assets in exchange or custodial wallets on which you have no control over your altcoins instead secure a hardware wallet but make sure your altcoin is supported by the device.

Coinbase doesn't have many type of altcoins so it's not a good choice. Binance US is good, CZ built it for only US market and there's no limitation to use it, as long as your money is clear.

It doesn't have to be that complicated. If you want to hold coins, you should prepare an account at the Trust wallet and an account at any big exchange. Once you have an account at Coinbase, you will dep usdt or your bitcoin on it and then you just need to buy the alts you want to hold. The next step is to Withdraw it to the Trust wallet and hold it for as long as you want. Just like that, don't turn it into many steps.

Why don't you just use https://www.binance.us/en rather than coinbase?

What you have mentioned is a very complicated way to buy crypto. You can try to use binance US, it's trusted and reliable exchange site for US people
