It's kind of the equivalent of someone going public in the stock market with no employees, no revenue, and no product.  Doing things like that usually gets your door kicked in by the feds because such ventures rarely end profitably for anyone (except the person orchestrating it).

It's a distinct possibility. Over $60m raised already. Those funds need to be invested somewhere to produce profit to then distribute as dividends of some sort to DAO holders.

If it's not fully invested then what happens to the fund?

If it's to succeed then it's going to be a LONG term investment. How long before Slock (first project proposal) turns a profit that can be ploughed back into the DAO?

It definitely could be the next Google (in the long run), or the next Enron.

Maybe I am surely confused here

DAO = Decentralized Autonomous Organization

So, what is the operating name of "The DAO" that is hosting the ongoing crowdsale?
Is it simply known as "The DAO"?
Or is not having an identifiable operating name part of the new DAO concept?

I am ready to be schooled!

That is called Slock.

No, slock.it is treated as a seperate thing. At the moment, it's called The Dao (with big "T"), but I think, there is already a rebranding discussion in their forums (I don't follow The Dao project closely, though).

Thanks guys.

Yes, Slock is just one of the projects seeking funding from The DAO (even though they also setup the DAO). Any DAO token holder can submit a project proposal.

So I guess a rebrand is coming soon.

There is an informal discussion on the name on the DAO's forums.

Essentially though, the DAO does not yet exist - it is still in the funding phase. How can you pick a name when no one is really in charge and you aren't even sure who the members will be yet?

Funding ends May 28, at that point in time I am sure one of the first orders of operations will be to choose an official name and get down to serious business.
