yes, the safest way to store your Bitcoin is a cold wallet, meaning you only access it via private key, which nobody (except you) should ever have access to, or hardware.
I made mine here:

https://www.bitaddress.org/

If you are super paranoid (like me) you can even download the website as zip-file and disconnect from the internet while going through the process. Don't ever loose your private key, or your coins will me gone for good (print and store it in a save place, or hand a copy to your mom, for instance).

One more thing: If your private key ever comes in contact with the internet (for example because you want to send some Bitcoin to another address), it is safer to create a new wallet to store the rest of your bitcoin in as its private key will not have been connected to the internet yet (thats why a paper wallet is particularly used for long term storage.).

Here is a tutorial of the process of bitaddress:

Personally I'm using Ledger Nano S for BTC and other supported alts. I think Trezor & KeepKey are good as well.

The safest wallet is one that you control the private key to, and that is not connected to the internet. This is called a cold wallet. There are a few different ways that you can run a cold wallet.

My preferred choice is using a hardware wallet, such as a Keepkey or Trezor, which can hold the private keys to a nearly unlimited number of public addresses. Those private keys never leave the hardware wallet, which is protected by a PIN. This allows you to complete transactions or sign messages without ever actually releasing your private keys from the hardware device.

You can also use a paper wallet, in which you simply write down the private key to a public address on a piece of paper and keep that paper safe, but I’ve never done this.

If you absolutely must use an internet-connected wallet (a hot wallet), then using multisig security is a major benefit. Basically you would distribute authorization among several devices, and require a certain number of those devices to sign off on any send transaction.

Obviously if you use any internet service to host your wallet (such a Coinbase or Bitpay), make sure that your account password is 40+ randomized letters, numbers, and symbols, and set up 2-factor authentication.

Good luck!

Well, it depends on the amount of Bithcoin. If you have less than 5 Bitcoin then you can put them in any online wallet. The Blockchain wallet is the safest one for online. If you have more than 100 Btc then you should use Hardware wallet to secure them. The hardware wallets are too secure, but it's not worthy to use them if your have low amount of BTC.

Just take a quick google search for 'bitcoin hardware wallet' and voila you have found the safest wallet for a newbie. If you buy a hardware wallet you don't have to worry about keyloggers on your PC, Man in the middle attack at public places where you want to use a public WIFI, etc. You can find really good comparisons in the Beginner thread here in the forum about wallets so it defenately deserves the reading. Be aware and don't jump into the crytocurrency business immediately have a good read before and you will be safe.
