GPU'S are out of the race for mining BTC, you need asics for that.

With GPUs today you can only mine x11 or scrypt-n coins on a multipool, there isn't another way to realize a decent profit

Like I said, I am in it for the data, not the profit. I am willing to LOSE money mining as long as I get my data.

But you can't mine BTC with GPU's anymore.  That's the whole point.

Hmmmmm.... I guess I will have to figure out a way to edit my program to run asics.

Or simply switch your mining client in a GPU-only coin as i told you before: so you can get at the same time better earnings and statistics/graphs from the pool Wink

Well, I have successfully gotten my program compatible for ASICs! Now getting it ready for an Altcoin is the trick.

Even if you had the fastest video card, it'd probably top out at 800 MH/s or so for SHA-256 or Bitcoin.  So to get to 200 GH/s speed to mine that 0.01 BTC/day, you'd need 250 of these GPU's.  At $350-$400 a card excluding power costs, that's pretty expensive to get essentially $5 worth of Bitcoin.

Hope that clears the picture up, as GPU mining is dead.  It's like trying to run Crysis on a Pentium 3 computer with an onboard Intel Graphics adapter.  Impossible.

any GPU, unless you have some kind of hardware compatibility, if you take small amount to the last consequences and use polls . But GPUs now are good only to mine litecoin and lower tier currencies

I am working on a research project but I don't think I have the required hashing power to actually mine any BTC to get data off of.

What sort of data are you looking for? If it is just data you need, you can ask any miner here to give you rather precise mining data. I am sure some members here will not mind helping you out for educational purposes.

Or you can buy a bunch of old usb blockerupters real cheap on ebay just to test out mining. 6 of them should get you 2G hash/s. I don't know how much you will mine from them... 0.0001 per day?

The data I am looking for needs to be monitored in real time and I have built a mining program specifically for that purpose. The only thing is that I don't have the computer knowledge to reprogram it for ASICs. I might be able to get by with less than 0.01 BTC a day. I suppose I could go for just 0.01 BTC a week and keep track of the data over a longer period of time.

I am trying to keep as much info about this data collection venture a secret for now because I think the data I gather will revolutionize the BTC/Altcoin community and I intend to profit from it by providing the information on a website and collecting ad revenue. I just don't want anyone to steal my idea when I am so close to getting this information.

I am working on a research project but I don't think I have the required hashing power to actually mine any BTC to get data off of. So I am looking at getting a new desktop with some powerful GPUs to mine BTC but I am unsure how many GPUs or what GPUs I would need to get about 0.01 BTC every 24 hours. I am not concerned with electricity cost or overall profitability, just on getting some data about BTC for a documentary. So what would I need?

Don't even bother with GPU's anymore.  Early 2013 was the last you could effectively mine Bitcoins with GPU's.

You can't even mine Scrypt coins effectively with GPU's, just non profitable alt coins.

Like the others have been saying, you'd need an Antminer S1 overclocked to 200 GH/s to ensure 0.01 BTC/day for your project.

This calculator should help with your analysis:

GPU mining is dead..

You're going to need atleast 195 GH/s to produce .01 BTC a day (at current difficulty)..

Well that explains why my current setup isn't working. But it offers hope for the future, it looks like there are a few GPUs out there that can put out that much power for a relatively low price. Thank you! That is a lot of help!

And you'll need commercial power and deep pockets to reach that goal. S1's are cheap and 350-450 watts for 180-195 GH/s.

Your probably better off getting a dedicated ASIC machine, or at least a small array of Gridseed miners.
