I see a lot of interesting responses and opinions, as well as great tips and facts. Thank you all for taking the time to input your effort.

What, if any, service do you use to set up your masternode? Do you use a VPS? Or do you run it from home? I understand you need a static IP to run one so that is a big point in decisions.

I do both personally. Some MN projects that only allow 1 IP/node make it so you just have to have more than one VPS. You do need a static ip, however, if your residential IP, which is usually dynamic only changes every few months, it'll work just fine too.

I run some nodes on an ubuntu VM at home, just forwarding the ports from my router to my firewall and then to the VM, works fine.

I would try to get bitsend. DASH's MN is already too costly and the ROI is not looking so good.

You can get your ROI in 3 years with BSD and the coin itself has a decent trading volume compared to the other dead alts coins with MN.

Too bad the cost for a BSD MN was $1k few days ago now it is $1.2k.

Well, it all comes down to what BSD can be in the future and what your investment plan is. It's just like for Bitcoin. If you're a long term player, there's a point at which debating whether or not to pay 200$ more doesn't matter if your node is worth 10'000$ or more next year. Just like when Bitcoin will rich 20'000$ again (I'm positive it will) a lot of people will think "crap, shoulda bought at 3800$ and not wait for a drop to 3500$".

As for Dash's ROI of about 7%, it's still better performing than most traditional investment I think. But yeah, at 80'000$ a node it's out of reach for most.

I wouldn't call any msaternode with a presale a waste.  Developers don't work for free and they need money to fund future development.  All the top coins had premines to help secure funds for their projects.

What future development? Most of the masternode coins are still waiting upto now on how to implement the PIVX fix for the fake post attack Cheesy

Any real developer don't need a pre-sale to work on his project. Having a premine is a different thing and if the dev start selling the pre-mine via pre-sale then its another story and should be avoided.

Grin Any Masternode project that has a pre-sale phase is not worth the time joining Cheesy its just a vaporware and most of the time the developer will just dump on the first day of exchange listing.

Grin Any Masternode project that give ROI in 3 days should be greatly avoided its just use to attract investors to buy the coin enriching only the project developer/owner

I agree some master nodes are so dirt cheap might as well throw some pocket change on a few of them to get a node and see what happens.

But one should always have 1 Halo coin masternode they can afford. So if Dash is too expensive go down the list. Next one would be Pivx for about $7500 for a masternode. If that's too expensive go with Zcoin at $5500 and so on.

Stick with the top 5 masternode coins by market cap.
Nearly all of them are garbage so that's why only top 5 will survive for next bull run. They have trend setting tech and not some simple copy and paste code clone coin

That means Dash, Pivx, Zcoin, and Horizon . Those are the top 4 biggest market cap masternodes in that order. Rest is just trash and lost more than 95 percent value and can't even cover the hosting cost of a measily $15 a month.

I don't fully agree. Sure, a lot of the nodes are complete shit, but there are a few projects that come out of the lot. Some of them are dirt cheap too, so you're not risking that much.

@OP, in general, what you want to look for, as for any project are:

- What does the project aim to do? Is there a market for it or is it yet just another dash/pivx copycat with nothing new to offer?
- Use cases
- What does the dev team look like (is it made of one poor soul or a team?)
- Are there regular annoucements other than "We've been listed on whatever measly exchange or portfolio app"
- Premine allocation

Is it worth it? Well, most of the masternodes have lost a ton of value, so there are a lot of good projects in which you can drop a few satoshis as if it were 2017 again. It's a simple way to generate passive income (we're not necessarily talking high dollar figures) while keeping operating costs pretty low. Quite a few masternode allow having more than 1 node per IP too.

Don't get fooled by ROI % numbers on sites like masternodes.online. What really matters is volume and exchanges. If you have 1000% ROI but the volume is not even 0.01 BTC, you can quickly find yourself with something that is worth scraps. Aim at coins that have at least more than 0.50 BTC in volume on a good reputable exchange.

I have had my share of bad experiences with masternodes, so research is key here. The best node probably remains Dash, but the entry cost is way too high.
