It has been a big issue in many countries, especially the poor ones. I guess governments should proportionate quality education to their citizens, so they wouldn't become problem gamblers, because they would know the risks implied. The point is that governments don't offer quality education to the people, maybe due to the fact it's not interesting for them to have a critical and conscious population who thinks by themselves and don't rely on politicians to survive.
This is a good suggestion though but Just giving citizens quality education alone won't deter them from continuing with their gambling in as much as their conditions still remains same after being educated. The government needs to partner with the private sector creating a synergy between the two sectors to create massive employments. Many of the gamblers around my neighborhood ain't actually uneducated but a lot of them involve in gambling out of lack of a proper job and they feel gambling could fill that with gambling some extra bucks could be earned.

An idle man will always have time to spend in gambling all day but when he's is productively engaged with a job he will seldom have time to exhaust on gambling knowing they have a job to attend to the next day. It may not entirely stop the citizens from gambling but it's going to cause a moderation to the growing number of gamblers in the country.

I was exploring the forum and a member's post caught my eye in that post he mentioned that the people of a country are getting addicted to gambling and it is becoming a big issue for them, especially those people who cannot afford funds those are also being addicted to the gambling.
Now I want such a discussion in this thread that if the gambling addiction rate is high in a country, what should the government do? And what not to do? If the government bans gambling, it should be supported, which is a terrible decision for investors in gambling sites of that country, and those who gamble for genuine entertainment, will not it interfere with their personal freedom? So let me have your opinions what should be better way to recover from these situations for a country?

Gambling has become a global issue and a major concern but the thing is, gambling has been existing for years why is it influencing a lot of people now? It's a very simple answer, technology has made it very accessible, a lot of people engage in online gambling due to how easy it is to access. In my country majority of the youths are unemployed but they struggle with gambling addiction, imagine how disastrous this can be. I can't really say if the government provides Job opportunities this would reduce gambling addiction, i don't think anything can be done about it.
What you said is correct.
Nothing can be done to make gamblers not to get addicted to gamble, if the government wants to try their best, the only thing that I suggest they should do is to let the gamblers know the risk that's involved in gamble (mostly the newly gamblers). However, new gamblers only thinks that gamble will provide quick money for them meanwhile it won't.
And lastly, even if the government provide jobs for the unemployed youths they will probably continue gambling, it is only those that are not yet gamblers that will not consider gambling because they now have a job. Although, if a gambler that have a bigger dream doesn't have a good paying job he might consider gambling (because he's eager to make quick money) so such person will gamble.

Actually this problem cant be 100% be solved or would be isolated out. We've seen that there are really that there are places or countries who had banned out gambling but its citizens do really able to play out
without being caught and thats the help of VPN and there's no way that it could be stopped out. This is why this problem cant really be totally stopped but of course as a gambler who do violates out those rules or laws then once you've been caught out, then you would really be that definitely be ending up on facing up some problems and thats why you should really be trying out to be careful on the moment that you are violating something. There are really governments who do really think off about their citizens condition on which they will be trying out avoid them because we know that addiction could really happen.

In order for them to stop out such potential gambling addiction problem or even on the moment that they've seen that addiction issues or situations had increased into their place or country then its normal that
they would really be that reacting out or doing something to stop it. Some government doesnt really care at all because they will really be that coming after from those huge tax on which
cant be denied that when it comes to economical effect then these businesses are really that relevant.

The government can't really do anything. It isn't like COVID where there was vaccine produce. The only solution to this gambling epidemic is personal responsibility and corporate responsibility. Personal responsibility entails, the individual taking responsibility for their gambling activities and behaviours. Like sticking to their budget, no loan to gamble, setting a time limit, no chasing losses and the others. Corporate responsibility entails looking out for family, friends, and even strangers who show the earliest sign of gambling addiction and helping them out. The government cannot do everything. In my country we have a saying that goes, change begins with you. And it is a call to personal responsibility.

The government could take a more active role in educating the younger generations about the dangers of hardcore gambling, because it feels rather overlooked in most syllabuses. Going into depths like the mathematics or the tricks that can be used to lure you in, it feels like there could be at least a dedicated session each year. Just like their could be a dedicated session on how a credit card works, or how a mortgage works. This is the sort of practical advice that would really help out students later in life but is often skimmed over, if it even gets a mention at all. Education in all it's forms and varieties is important, but this sort of real world knowledge might help a student in their life than knowing what happened in Pompeii for example.

This is the biggest problem in my country, the government only blocks casino websites, and some developers are arrested, but the situation is still an emergency, many people are ruined by gambling addiction, there is not much the government can do, if the government blocks user savings accounts, of course it will harm the country too, public awareness is needed to minimize the risk of gambling addiction

I don't think that banning gambling is an option, and even less now that we have Internet and anyone who wants to can overcome geographical barriers if he really intends to gamble.

In my country the Government has already taken several measures to limit addiction, especially among the youngest:

- it is forbidden to open a casino at X metres from schools, universities and other educational centres.
- it is forbidden to advertise casinos on television before 1am.
- it is forbidden to enter a casino without being of legal age and being identified. They have been forced to install barriers and facial recognition cameras at the entrance.

Personally I think that the last one is way too much, but I have to agree that it can be useful to avoid children and people with problems go there and play.

Ideally Governments should protect their citizens, but we return to the eternal debate between freedom and security.

If a country loses its people to gambling, it is easy to identify what to address. It is to stop the source, the gambling casino, or online things. Maybe the country leaders would find a way to prevent access to gambling.

I believe that checking with the most access in the country is the best approach. If it isn’t an online casino, it would be easy to ban access to that. Then, if it is land-based, make sure that it is stopped. I guess it depends as long as the root source of the problem is being eradicated.

If gambling addiction is becoming a problem in a country, then banning gambling will not be the only solution because banning gambling can only force citizens to start seeking out illegal ways to gamble in illegal casinos or at undercover casinos. The best approach to tackling the problem of gambling and addiction by any government is to properly sensitize the citizens about it through campaigns, seminars, etc. The government of any country can actually play a huge role in controlling the rate at which its citizens get addicted to gambling if they can properly focus on it and have it in their budgets.

Good sensitization campaigns and promotions will help people understand better what the purpose of gambling should be.

Education is the most important imo. If people get more educated about gambling and math, it is likely they won't become addicts so easily. The country's financial situation is also equally important. People easily get addicted to gambling in poor countries while you won't find many addicts in wealthy countries.

Education + financially well being is the ultimate key to success probably.

If one of them lacks, one might easily lose self control and become an addict.

I don't really believe any other solution is a "real" solution.

In my opinion, the government should not fight gambling addiction at all.

Currently, it is widely believed that the state should actively interfere in the personal lives of citizens. This implies that citizens are unreasonable children who need to be looked after and subject to numerous prohibitions.

In my opinion, there is no need to think that adults are unreasonable children. Only children need constant control. An adult independently decides all his life issues. State intervention in the lives of citizens should be minimal.

There is such a thing as civil society - it is independent non-profit organizations that should solve such problems. The church can also be of great help in this matter.

Regulations... I don't wish to see & hear gambling ads everywhere at any time of the day! There is a time and a place for everything...

My kids are watching YouTube and in the middle of a cartoon (or some kid video) start an ad about some casino and their bonuses... some slots & jackpots! I'm listening to the radio in the car and there's a commercial (with all the sounds) about a casino and big wins. Explain that to me.

When the biggest of them all don't respect kids, and the government allows them to do that how can we see any changes?

I think government should regulate and
mandate all gambling sites to allow KYC for gamblers therefore every gambler can be monitored to avoid addiction that is there should be a maximum and fixed amount of money to be staked daily to curb unnecessary and excessive gambling thus any gambling sites that fail to comply with the directive should be fine appropriately, though it's not easy to be achieved but with all the will and commitment by both parties it can be actualized because there is the need to curb and discourage addiction in gambling due to the negative effect on the families of the victims and the society.

Replace "gambling" with alcohol, drugs, and tobacco, and you get the picture! How do you stop addiction when some don't want to stop it themselves?
In most of the Western world, there are help lines, NGOs, associations, and every kind of help possible to cure addiction but most don't approach them they stop the counseling, they relapse in less than a week, and so on!

Well, you could stop addition, you can go fully North Korean style as there is no problem with drugs or gambling here but would you trade your freedom from something that most people can take care of themselves? I woundn't!

The most effective means to reduce gambling addictions by a government will be to create jobs that keep the majority of the youths in the country engage and busy, and also providing a good economic empowerment for their citizens, this way no one will have reason to gamble, because many of those that gamble in most part of the world does that for means of making money.

Gambling addiction is older than workers' migration, Great Britain banned gambling in 1541 because of addiction and people making debts:

Besides, people need money to gamble, if they have money then it means they work!

Have you not noticed that the government in the countries that allow gambling do not care about citizens but care more about the taxes that are generated from gambling and betting industry. People should discipline themselves and not get addicted to gambling but be using the money that they can afford to lose to gamble instead.

If the government ban gambling in their country, they are only encouraging offshore gambling. Those that still wish to continue gambling will use foreign gambling sites instead to gamble.
Then what will you say about my region in my region gambling is banned and casinos are illegal in my country's but if you see the corruption implications by the previous dictator then you will find Bangladesh in a bad condition. Here, our government could have legalized gambling and earned extra tax, but it has not done so. Instead, I have seen that corruption is relatively low in those countries where gambling is legal, I not talking about all. however, they are taking a high amount of tax from gambling casinos their corruption level is low.

Impose a life-threatening penalty. It's one way to make people afraid of getting caught, they may still be gambling but at least they will not do it publicly which means fewer will do it. This will not prevent people from gambling. It's illegal in my country but people are still doing it.

But it's also true the government's tax money from casinos will not be of big help anymore. This would only mean the government has a better way of generating money than gambling.

I can tell you what they proposed in my country: Italy!
Advertising on betting game is illegal. They write on the scratch cards that the game is risky and potentially harmful.
they created a monopoly to "control" the companies in the sector. Each website has a lot of warnings while you play and government pay just few pennies to patient association. No this is not enough but of course is at least "a start".

In my opinion, countries all over the world even with help or without the aid of the government will not reduced drastically the users who are addicted to gambling especially when your country are proactive and supported companies that the major business is gambling or casino. I doubt any countries would help in the major ways they can to avoid such reduction since they benefited them as well in terms of taxes and under the table payments.

My country completely prohibits gambling and even tens of thousands of online gambling sites have been blocked but still appear again and again... The problem is that the level of gambling addiction has begun to get worse where they dare to take high risks, such as robbery, cheating company funds, etc. in order to play online gambling, this should be the awareness of all people who do not have a sense of responsibility in gambling.

The government should invest more attention on parental care, emotional intelligence, therapy, and societal beliefs. These four responsibilities will help growing people to desire for what's good, and not of that which is detrimental to their happiness. Additionally, decreasing the time parents spend working for money will help improve emotional intelligence on kids.

Recently, a lot of toddlers are so bored that they look for entertainment by all means, and it's not conducive for their growth. The moment people begin to care for themselves, it'll be hard to find a person that'll want to end up addicted. Because it doesn't display a sign of self compassion.

First we need to see how big the level of addiction is, whether it is still controlled, moderate, or in danger that requires quick and decisive action.
  • The first level; I think the government just needs to continue to control the financial flow in gambling and stay at that level so that there won't be a lot of people who are excessively addicted from gamblers.
  • The second level; the government must be more active in educating the public about the dangers of addiction, providing education directly from the new generation to the old generation in different forms of socialization, such as the new generation implementing views on gambling addiction in schools, limiting gambling advertisements in certain segments and conducting special meetings with casino owners so that excessive addiction does not occur.
  • The third level; stopping all gambling activities, this may be true as you said that it will disturb some sectors and people who are involved in gambling, but this decision is the final decision when efforts to reduce addiction in society cannot be achieved and even worse.

There was a post that I read on this same board where the government of that country bars anything that has to do with gambling promotion and content from being published by their content creators, and anyone found breaking such a law will also be punished, even gambling-related ads being banned.

If I'm in a position to take a step that will help tackle gambling addiction, the above is the first thing that I will do, as most people are tempted to gamble based on the type of content they see online.

I can also go as far as creating a gambling awareness program that can help in educating my people about the risks involved in gambling and how to tackle them.
