I'm new here and it seems this place is filled with scammers and accounts get hacked/sold/stolen quite frequently. other than changing my password regularly, what other tips can you give me to make sure I keep my account safe? it's a shame you can't have 2FA here.
thanks!

Just make a hard password for your account, because already 2 years my account is still fine and i only have hard password on it and don't download something suspicious that maybe containt a virus.

A strong password with letters, capitals and numbers is a great asset.  Make sure it is not the same as your email or anything important to you.  Also, trust no one and you will be dandy.

I am a Satoshi, like my father before me...

Scammer and Hackers try to get higher ranking accounts. Don't worry too much about your newbie account.

Make sure the password of your Email and Bitcointalk don't match and change it regularly. You should be fine.

Just put security questions that would help securing your account if its hacked by someone but for now youre still safe because you are brand new member no one would even think or have the intent to hacked your account. Usually hacked account are those who have valuable things on it which some hackers want it really bad.

using the security question will get your account locked right away, the database was leaked a long time ago, and all the security questions were known by the hackers, so Theymos decided to reprogram SMF so that any account that's recoverd by security question is automatically locked.

It's common and good practice to use a unique, strong password for every website. I use keepass to manage my unique and strong password. Changing your password regularly might make your account look like it was hacked... Sounds silly, but changing your password might actually make you look less trustworthy in some people's eyes.
I know SMF (the script used for this forum) doesn't have 2FA included, but in a while, bitcointalk will be migrated to epochtalk, so i hope 2FA will be an option in the future.

Tips to avoid getting hacked/scammed on this forum would include:
- when doing business, always check out the trust feedback of your businesspartner
- when doing business, always check if your business partner changed his password (not a good sign)
- when doing business, always ask for a signed message, signed with an old, staked address
- when doing business, always use an escrow
- double-check the url : h t t p S : / / b i t c o i n t a l k . o r g
- avoid doublers, HYIP's, ponzi's
- don't gamble more than you can afford to lose
- if a deal looks to good to be true, it usually is
- check any external website: search the forum and use google for reviews, see if the whois info is hidden, look for contact info, lookup the company in it's country's company database, look for pictures, use google maps, ask advice on this forum,...
- listen to the advice of trusted members... Guys like Vod, lutpin, mexxer-2 can be really stubborn, but they're usually correct when spotting a scammer
- always be extra carefull with reversible transactions, including paypal or accounts that can be re-claimed trough social engineering

account hacks are not that often and it is not limited to this forum it can happen anywhere. just use a strong password which is long and a combination of letters, numbers and signs. also do not use the same password in any other place and always keep an updated antivirus to protect against malware.

my suggestion is do not make your password same as your email password, because i see many people gets hack with this technique this is happen over and over again, and many of them use password that easy to predict like date of born, and other else. your step to changing password in regularly was good soo keep continue.

If your newly registered then your account should be fairly safe, The only way your going to get hacked is if someone manages to successfully phish you but this is simple to avoid, just dont reply to any emails from bitcointalk. You wont ever be asked to insert your password directly from email. Also dont rely on other peoples trust too much because there are hacked accounts that have good trust. Just assume everyone is a scammer and you will be fine.
