Definitely a shirt with a collar.

I have a couple of weeks before I go see a family member graduate but I've never been to a graduation so I'm not sure what to wear, can anyone help?

Clothes would be a good place to start and I like a nice suit.

No one does that any more though.

My $.02.

Learning the troll avoidance button :)
If your in the bleachers nice clothing is fine nothing to outstanding unless you plan on taking photos after with the graduate then some proper attire would be appropriate for the occasion.

You should at the very least wear a collared shirt and a decent pair of pants  (not jeans). If you want to toss on the tie or just wear a suit then go for it, but it isn't necessary. As long as you aren't showing up in a t-shirt you should be more than good. If you want a more specific explanation, look up "smart casual", that will be professional enough for any non-business situation.
