So any recomendations for which video cards to use?
Thanks for the thoughts on the Linux based mining. However, I'm going to stick with Windows for now, since I just want to get some serious hash rate going ASAP.

i have not seen any difference in mhash between optimized minersoftware/kernel on windows to the same machine on linux.

How about linux virtualization?
I'd like to do that because some nontrivial fine motor disability makes me use voice recognition software.
I use cygwin all the time to maintain remote servers.
I just wonder if I'll get the eight GPU benefit of linux in virtualization.

If you're talking about a Linux virtual machine, no. The OS and drivers must have direct access to the video cards, not through a virtualization layer.

That's a better situation anyway. Debian Lenny or Ubuntu. No GUI. Straight mining rig.

cheaper GPU ? power-up it with cheaper motherboard with built-in CPU[AMD Fusion or iNtel Atom]

I think Windows is not interested in how many cards you have.

Think about hash/watt.
You can buy and sell your card(s), but you have to pay for electricity.

I'm thinking about maybe the 5070s. The seem to be a good price point. I started with a 6870 in my existing PC but I'm wondering if that's not the best in terms of hash/dollar performance. The other thing I'm considering is if it would be smart to go with 6990s, since even though it may not be the best hash/dollar, the fact that I could put 4 into a single dedicated, purpose-built mining rig might be smart, as opposed to having to build two separate rigs to get that sort of hash rate.
And another thing - any problems running 4 video cards with Windows? I thought I'd read somewhere that it's not supported with Windows but is with Linux... seems like this wouldn't be the case, but can someone validate this statement?
