you want security, yet you can't wait for the blockchain to download... if you had to download a movie you would wait. just wait for it download, and then use armory, most secure setup one can have and even allows you to make a paper wallet, the most secure wallet of them all.

You can temporarily use the blockchain wallet and let the qt one download overnight. I would use the client qt one to store most of your funds. Make sure it's encrypted and backed up.

Commonly used and widely trusted wallets to consider:

Paper wallet
Armory
Bitcoin-Qt
Electrum
MultiBit
blockchain.info/wallet

Investigate each and figure out which one best suits your particular needs.

Syncing the wallet for the first time takes a lot of time, because it will download the whole blockchain (history of transactions).
Also the qt-client isn't that newbie-friendly. I often read that Armory is a very good wallet (but afaik it needs to sync, too).

I'm very new to bitcoins and after trying to sync the bitcoin-qt wallet (that took hours upon hours upon hours) I kind of gave up.  Especially after doing a search and reading that some people took days to sync that wallet for the first time.  What is a good secure wallet to use?
