Bing does the same as DuckDuckGo, no .com on the first page.

FYI, DuckDuckGo buy search result from Bing. So next time you could used one of them to save your time.

Source: https://help.duckduckgo.com/duckduckgo-help-pages/results/sources/

Only Google shows this .com on the top page.

Since most people use Google Search, it's likely the owner of .com domain optimize SEO result only for Google Search.

I tried out a few different locations, using that same search string, but changing the vpn location:
In my location, original forum is shown first, .com is on the 2nd page on Google search.

Ultimately, the owner of that domain would want compensation for the domain. If you believe theymos should buy it, you should find out from the current owner how much he wants for his domain.
I suspect that price of such domain won't be small. But considering how BTC Bitcointalk have, probably it's not an issue. It's only question whether owner of it would agree to sell it.
I think it's important for Bitcointalk to have .com domain.

I tried out a few different locations, using that same search string, but changing the vpn location:

Russia, Estonia -> ".com" in first position, “.org” second

Kazakhstan and Ukraine, Finland -> ".org" first , ".com" in second position

Azerbayan -> ".org" first, ".com" within first page

Spain -> ".org" first, ".com" within second page

Of course results vary from one person to another, but it certainly seems to crop-up either first or second in a closely related set of countries.

Bump.

This domain name was acquired by some forum about cryptocurrencies and it is now on the first place in the search results from Google:
I tried searching for both 'bitcointalk' and 'bitcointalk.com' and both google searches had the forum as the top result, and neither search had the .com domain anywhere on the first page.

It appears the .com domain is a forum used by people that speak Russian. So I think search results for people using google in languages other than Russian, will not easily stumble upon that forum.

Ultimately, the owner of that domain would want compensation for the domain. If you believe theymos should buy it, you should find out from the current owner how much he wants for his domain.

And it is the only one forum in the search results from Yandex (most popular site in Russia):

It would be great if this domain name belonged to the real bitcointalk and then theymos could put a forum mirror on it or at least one page with an explanation of how to go to the forum if it is blocked on some territories. At the moment, it is much easier for a newcomer to get on a fake bitcointalk, so because of this domain we lose potential users and visitors.

.net...who uses .net anyhow?
They'd ask a big price for it because of the popularity of this forum. I'm not sure whether its worth the price that they would ask, and the .com seems to be trying to be a competitor to Bitcointalk so I'm assuming that they don't like how Bitcointalk is right now. Judging on some of the words they've used it seems like they might be a little hostile towards Bitcointalk.

Just block those websites on your PC

On windows:
1: Open Windows Explorer and go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
2: Double-click hosts, and select Notepad
3: Go to the last line
4:Type 127.0.0.1 + website you want to block
e.g.

127.0.0.1 bitcointalk.com
127.0.0.1 bitcointalk.to
127.0.0.1 thebitcointalk.net

On linux
1. open the /etc/hosts file with your text editor and add:
127.0.0.1 bitcointalk.com
127.0.0.1 bitcointalk.to
127.0.0.1 thebitcointalk.net

Source / more info: https://support.rackspace.com/how-to/modify-your-hosts-file/

This way you can never accidentally visit the wrong site.
The domain will resolve to localhost.

Sorry I typed bitcoin.com in error, I meant that I registered with bitcointalk.com, which is on the list of scam sites in link in my previous post. I registered with bitcointalk.com which is why I am worried.
Thanks for clarifying that I should only change my password on sites if I used the same password as bitcointalk.com.
Thanks for providing the link  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=4.0

Now that you know it was definitely [Suspicious link removed], and that bitcointalk.com is on the thread I linked in my previous post, should I change the password to a really long and complicated one or is there any way I can just stop my membership of that site.

Thanks in advance I really appreciate your help.

Just don't use the password / email / username you use to register on bitcointalk.com don't use any combination of those 3 together.

The website already recorded you register and log in credentials, and if the owners are dubious, they already have access to that information. You should be more interested I'm protecting you accounts on other sites which shares similar password and email (or a combination of any)
To your earlier question about the password reset link, I would advice you do not click on it as, it does not offer any level of protection.

Hi and thanks again for your quick reply.
There is another thread on here that has a list of scam fake sites and bitcoin.com is on there. Here it is. https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/list-of-scam-fake-bitcointalk-sites-5130480
So, I don't know if the operators are acting in bad faith as the above linked thread seems very trustworthy so I am still unsure as to whether or not I should complete my request for a new password, they have my email.
Bitcoin.com =/= Bitcointalk.com and Bitcoin.com as far as i know isn't malicious in the sense that they steal your passwords, but rather try to sell you stuff you don't actually want.

Quote
So, I don't know if the operators are acting in bad faith as the above linked thread seems very trustworthy so I am still unsure as to whether or not I should complete my request for a new password, they have my email.
It doesn't really matter. If you don't reuse your Bitcointalk.com password anywhere else in combination with the email you signed up with to Bitcointalk.com, there is nothing to worry about.

The most they could do with your email if it doesn't have the same password as it has on Bitcointalk.com is to bruteforce it, which is, if your password is longer than ~10 characters, very improbable. If you have something like Authy/2 Step Verification, it becomes impossible.

Quote
I always use different usernames and  passwords for each website I visit but I am worried as they have my email.
I have other types of non bitcoin forums that I use the same email for, but the passwords on these sites are diffferent to the one I used for bitcointalk.com.

Are you saying I should change my password for each site with that same email on, or do you just mean that site as that site is the only one with that password?
You should only change your password on sites that use the SAME password as you used on Bitcointalk.com, (which you said, you didn't, so there should be no problem.)
Quote
Also, should I stop using that email on future sites I might register with, ie, again, non bitcoin sites?
No. Just make sure that when you register on a new site, you use a different password than you used on Bitcointalk.com, that's all.

It never hurts to ask. If you're looking to (potentially) recover some Bitcoin, your best bet would be to ask your question here -> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=4.0 (If it's related to recovering certain wallets that is?)

Hi thanks again for your quick reply, much appreciated.
I am not worried about being hacked here, I am worried about being  hacked on bitcoin.com after reading the information on here.
I'm not tech savvy so I don't know how they would try to phish me, but reading the information on this thread made me think that registering with bitcointalk.com was a really bad idea.
What should I do to remove myself from bitcointalk.com and can I post my question on here, it is about bitcoin and litecoin?
Thanks in advance for any help.
I guess you could change your password to an enormous long string of characters and numbers. Assuming that the operators of that site are not acting in bad faith ( which i so far have not seen evidence of) one would hope they would store salted hashes of your password (encrypted), and thus even if that site gets hacked, the hackers won't be able to use it anywhere.

If the operators are acting in bad faith, which you seem to suspect-- they already know the current password + email you have set. In which case you need to think twice if you used that password + email on any other sites as well. If so, your best bet would probably be to change the passwords on those sites, and not on Bitcointalk.COM since they already know your password.. (Although it probably won't hurt to also change your password on Bitcointalk.com, but you'd have to assume that everything you change your password to is logged somewhere.)

Quote

As long as you have no information on Bitcointalk.com that could reveal your identity, you could probably just let it be.

Hi thanks for your quick reply.
Sorry my post was unclear. I will clarify. I had a bitcoin question and reigstered with bitcointalk.com.
I know this site is not related to bitcointalk.com now that I have read info on here.
I made a post on there but didn't hear anything, and when I revisited it the post had been removed.
I pm'd the admin on bitcointalk.com and they said it was removed as it was probably spam, which is wasn't.

My first sentence is related to the request for new password on bitcoin.com, because I read this thread over here and got scared. I thought it would be wise to request a new password on bitcoin.com to stop any phishing danger after reading this thread on here.

After requesting the new password for bitcointalk.com I had second thoughts about the idea of requesting a new password for that site, and don't know whether or not to request the new password with the link they provided in case they try to phish me.

Thankfully I  used different passwords for this site and that site.

Would you be able to advise me what to do regarding bitcointalk.com to protect my safety?
For instance, should I ignore their email  in response to my request to reset the password?
I hope this is clear?
I am not tech savvy. Sorry for any confusion, but all help would be appreciated.

If you have different passwords for your account here and bitcointalk.COM you can already not be hacked here. Resetting your password on that site wouldn't make much sense. -- atleast i don't see how it makes sense.

If you requested a new password, how exactly would they try to phish you?

What the people in the OP are talking about is that they accidentally typed in bitcointalk.COM instead of .ORG, and thus had to relogin with their Bitcointalk credentials. (or so they thought.)
To prevent this from happening to you all you have to do is make sure you're on the right domain. Check if it's .ORG and if has the right layout/and or if it's bookmarked.

Hi
I registered with bitcointalk and made a post, the admin removed it saying it was spam. I messaged admin back and said it wasn't spam, a genuine question. They ignored my message.
Okay.. How is this first sentence related to:

Quote
I have requested a new password, but after reading this thread, am worried about submitting a new password because I read this thread and thought requesting a new password on that site would make me safe but now not sure. I have a strong third party security software, paid for for protection but worried that I am now vulnerable to be phished. I don't know whether to abandon the request for a new password. Please could anyone advise me what to do?
This?

Safe from what in the first place? Are you hacked? Did you lose access? What do you want to do?

But no, that site is not related to bitcointalk.

Asking for a new password on that site DOES nothing to your account here on bitcointalk. (Unless you give them the same password as that you've set here, in which case they might try to hack you with it (your bitcointalk account). (Is that what you did?)

Let's start raising funds for this domain... Members with 2 years minimum bitcointalk age must contribute.

Count me in with $50 contribution. Waiting for theymos to make an announcement.
Let's do the math in bitcoin,
1 Bitcoin is around $5,000 now
So the bitcointalk.com domain is rouhtly 13 BTC
I think that 13 BTC won't be a problem for the forum, but I don't know anything about the BTC reserve of the forum
So I think Theymos just didn't wanted to buy that domain yet. (even when BTC was near $20,000 that time the domain name was just a bit more than 3 BTC... good old days Smiley )

Let me tell you, I panicked for a few minutes while I pulled up the real bitcointalk and changed my password.  I got lucky in the face of my stupidity, because I could easily have been successfully phished.  Glad you didn't lose access to your account, iasenko.

I nearly did the same thing on another bitcointalk phishing site, back when PM spamming phishing links was still relatively new. Good thing that you did change your password.

I wouldn't say that a move necessarily would need to be made for theymos to acquire all other top level domains for bitcointalk, because most people will know that .org is the correct domain, and it's simply unfeasible to be doing it due to the costs. But there could come a situation where people are phished for their login details on these sites, even if right now they may not be a phishing site and may genuinely just be another bitcoin forum with close to no traffic, who knows what could happen in the future.

But this is a reason why bookmarking certain frequented sites is needed. You don't want to be caught in a simple phishing scam because of a momentary mistake.

The only thing you can do is ask theymos to try to buy the domain from whoever owns it. Otherwise you will need to know they are different.

Theymos might be able to make a trademark claim to get the domain registrar to give up the registration however this is not certain to work and would likely require a lawsuit.

I'd imagine that Theymos would have to purchase the .com and .net domains from whoever is cybersquatting them, and the owners probably would want a princely sum.
I think the owners will sell those domains only when hell freezes over...
They can use those names for phising for accounts or for any forum related data, now and in the future, so why would they kill the goose that laid the golden eggs?
And most of the average joes are falling for these kind of attacks quite easily, unfortunately...

This. To be completely honest even though I find it embarrassing as hell, I would've probably entered my bitcointalk username and password on the fake bitcointalk .to domain if I didn't have a password manager plugin on my browser. I immediately realized why there wasn't any login matches on the domain; and then I realized 5 seconds later..
