Perhaps theymos should reprice VIP at 30 BTC. To me, that's more reasonable than 50 BTC.

Maybe its time for something similar to VIP but updated for modern times, which still preserves the historical status of VIP?
Wouldn't this be very easy to do? You could convert all the current VIPs to something else, Founding Benefactor, or whatever, you could even let them vote on what they want to be called. Give that the same benefits as VIP and reprice VIP at 5 or 1 or whatever. Or create a new VIP* status.
On the other hand, theymos has already said that the forum has more than enough money, so maybe it really does not matter unless you want more VIP like members.

Other than couple of ads here and there , what does forum make money? Its weird to say a forum can make money enough to make theymos say 'forum has enough money' , good job however you managed to make decent enough money with a forum
Forums can actually be extremely lucrative due to the insane number of page views.
I think the real answer came up in this thread - no one is ever going to be VIP again at the current price. We can talk semantics all we want but its a dead mechanism. The last but one person donated over a year ago, and the last person some time before between then and now.
Same thing has happened on the generic donate address, bar the odd huge transaction which doesnt look like a donation. I saw the same thing actually. Donations were maybe $100 a month, but immediately went to 0 as soon as the price went up.

Yes this is also what I was going to get to. Btc being at the price it's at it's very unlikely anyone will be purchasing VIP or even donator status.
And it's kind of shitty because VIP members get some cool abilities but at the same time it doesn't justify 50 btc at the current price. A couple of years ago yes but today it's completely out of the question.

The monthly "donations" to that address are forum revenue from ads, unproxyban fees, and (historically) Donator/VIP donations. I send it there to provide transparency. (However, note that the balance of 17RTT... is not a meaningful number.)
Real donations are indeed very rare. Which is fine. The forum has plenty of money.

It's true that if someone donates 50 btc today he'll definitely pay more,but in the past it was laso the same princip.However,now we have the bitcoin's price much higher which leads to such discussions.For me,personally,the standard should apply to all and although the price is different,it's still people who donated 50 bitcoins no matter what.

Sad to see. For some, the only value of a bitcoin is how many dollars they can get for it.
Ideally, it would be nice to see everything priced in btc, but unfortunately the dollar is still the benchmark. It's much more stable as a currency. Most goods and services are still priced in dollars, so every time you buy something with btc, you have to see what its relative value is in dollars.

The 50 bitcoin rule to become a vip was made a while ago when bitcoins weren't this valuable. But now their much more valuable so what exactly would happen if someone donated 50 bitcoin these days?
Although it might not seem fair to us now since (50x500) it is a lot of money, you still would only get VIP.There was some discussion about this a while back and it would not be fair to the people that paid for it long ago. So basically you would only get VIP status, nothing else.
