Hey Phriend,

One option worth considering is using a service like changelly.com or Shapeshift.io to obtain Ripple. I personally found this method to be the most convenient option, but not always the best exchange rate. Essentially you could buy Ethereum through your regular exchange and convert it to Ripple with their website. Occasionally this might actually be cheaper than exchange fees, but more-so this option is usually much faster and doesn't require signing up for another hefty exchange account. Hope this helps!

I see that it is available on BitStamp -- do they have high fees to transfer BTC or ETH over to them?  (Does this take a long time?)

I also see that it is available on Cracken.  Is this easier to use for a U.S. customer?

Are any of the other exchanges as easy and safe and speedy as these two?

What's the best/easiest way?

To avoid the higher transfer fee, you might want to look at purchasing Litecoin first then sending and converting it to BTC (or ETH if supported for trading) on the exchange. The fee should be a lot less than sending Bitcoin directly to an exchange.

I have used Bitstamp and I really like using them due to the simplicity. Regarding transaction fees to transfer ETH and BTC, it isn't charged by Bitstamp, but rather by miners. Therefore the transaction fees may vary.

It isn't Bitstamp that charges you for fee for transferring BTC but rather the miners who confirm and upkeep the network. I would say use Bitstamp out of those two, Kraken has a confusing interface that isn't easy to follow. The best way to get funds online would be to wire them because afaik you can't use credit card for Bitstamp (been a while since used too)
