The easiest way to buy a litecoin is to go to a transaction platform like btc-e,cryptsy and crpto-trade etc.You just need to register there,deposit BTC or USD,choose a proper price and order,then you wiil get it.You can leave it on the site or withdraw to your own wallet.

BTC seems to be the way to go unless you want to wire money and such. I suppose it depends on what you mean by easy. Just sign up on one of the sites people noticed (vircurex is another one mentioned a lot), deposit some BTC and you can start trading.

Big fan of Kraken for LTC, although they take a goooooood 3 weeks to get you certified to do USD transactions.

Well it all depends on you. People here invest in coins they believe in. Everybody is going to tell you which ones they like best. But what I think is best you do is go out there and read what each of them brings. New, something that hasn't been done. Then invest in ones you think will do better. No other way, then you can't say it went wrong because I listened to somebody else.
