Should bad words in PM really be moderated or punished? This is the Internet. Such things happens every second. Just forget it, ignore. Only stupid people tries to hurt in PM with bad words, smart people always can find compromise or talk in other way.

P.S. You can always find your offender by IP Cheesy

I don't think that's possible if he or she is behind 7 proxies Cheesy

As far as I know, MODs has an ability to read PM's between the users without hitting the "report moderator" to MODs. (Correct me if I'm wrong with this statement)

No, no, no, don't say things like that. At any time, moderators do not have access to others users' PM.
Admins (and perhaps Global Moderators) have access to the PM if the PM is reported.
Thank you for the correction, I had become a Hero Member rank but all I know was that I have stated above. There's someone who told me with that information before, I believed the lies that I have known from the person who lied to me. You enlighten me now. Smiley

I found this from Global Moderator (from @hilariousandco) and it makes clear now. Tongue
No, we can't directly read PMs, just ones that are reported directly to us...

This is might case to case basis maybe there are arguing conversations that triggered emotion to become had spoken death threat. In this case, if that user isn't important at all you may belong them to your ignore list so that, he/she will not send you a PM any more.

If you have been clicked the report button, let the MODs will handle it and investigate who will deserve to punish under the forum rules #28. I assume "bad words" can be subjective but if you think it includes threats, spams, or something annoying, you are better to do "Report To Admin". Let Admin considers it, if it can be classified as a violation, I think Admin will punish him.

I think this has correlation with the rules No 8 and No 29. CMIIW

8. No threats to inflict bodily harm, death threats.
29. Sending unsolicited PMs, including but not limited to advertising and flood, is not allowed.

Treat it like you would if some rando on the street came up to you and sad "bad words"™. ie. you ignore them and walk away (put them on your ignorelist).

However, if those "Bad Words" happened to be real threats of physical violence or hate speech etc... then you would obviously report that to the appropriate authorities. (ie. "report to Admin")

I don't know the exact situation but what I'm thinking is maybe you triggered him to tell those bad words? What do you think? If not then maybe it's just his attitude because there are people who sounds like cocky sometimes Cheesy. Or maybe he got a coprolalia? And if you think that's the possible reason then better to understand him and just ignore if you can't take it any longer.

I don't think you need to bother.. you just have to add it to your personal ignore list. I have already added several people (member) to my ignore list because PM about airdrop and bounty..

i will make a topic in reputation tho to assure he will be tainted red.
C'mon mate. It's not an issue of tainting, I guess trust system isn't designed to tag someone for such a reason.
if the red flag can be aimed at it, I think there will be many victims..

Since the penalty for PM violations is so severe (apparently), I'd be conservative about reporting them.

I don't mind getting unsolicited PMs from members as long as they're not spam, which I've definitely received and reported in the past.  I get PMs from members asking for feedback to be removed and all sorts of other things, and to me that's not a problem--not even if there's bad language involved.  As far as profanity goes, you probably want to have a thick skin where that's concerned on bitcointalk, given how much freedom of speech Theymos allows.

Well as i mentioned above, there is other actions to be taken depending from the context. For example, spamming my pm by words like "stupid, idiot, f..." isn't a big deal, I will put him in my ignore list. However, if he said those words with accusations (repeatedly) like scammer? doxxer? ped... without proof + asking for money? (I don't know really depends from the situation) then I will not hesitate to expose him to everyone, and I am sure people will find that he doesn't deserve to be trusted!

I came across this post from theymos when I was searching through the forum:

- If someone complains about an unsolicited PM you send them, then you're probably going to be banned.
'Complain' in this context probably means reporting the user, and this would likely get them banned.
This ban I believe would last for 7 days, but this should be at the discretion of the admin depending on the situation.

I am not sure, but I think if someone send you "fuck you" without any reason it might be something for moderators.

Can you provide more context? Was there any conversation prior to "bad words"?

Will it be counted as unsolicited spam if I report the PM? Well, I'm not tempted nor feeling offended with the PM but I would like to know what is the forum standing on such case? Posting such bad words on public is okay as per the rules (as we know we have TMAN  Cheesy) but what's the rule for PM in such case?
If you report such cases if the admin or global mod thinks that the profile needs an infraction they usually gets a temporary ban for two weeks if i am not wrong and that is the case with mass PM and advertisement through PM.

If it's not spam but something "personal", I'd just add the user to my PM ignore list and forget about him.
I got your point. That's the easiest solution and that's what I am likely to follow as I already have said I'm not tempted nor felt offended. But what's the forum standing on that? There must be a rule for that or anyone is free to use slang on PM and forum won't take any step?

So long as they are not making death threata which is not allowed here then i suggest you just ignore them. We have people of different walks of life here. Some people were brought up well whereas others had a poor upbringing.
Block them from sending you PM by heading over to your profile, under modify profile,  select personal message options and then you can add the username on ignorelist.

It depends if he (she) is making physical or doxxing threats, i will report him and add him to the ignore list. Otherwise I would ignore his pm once and if he repeated it, well as Loyce said i will add him to the ignore list and i will make a topic in reputation tho to assure he will be tainted red.
