This book is really good for the technical side of how does it works : Mastering Bitcoin: Unlocking Digital Cryptocurrencies by Andreas Antonopoulos
I wouldn't suggest that you create an altcoin if you are not sure what are you doing because it will require you to develop it and for a coin to have some more fundamentals than bitcoin, if you are looking for it to succeeded. However you could try to make one for quick profit but it will still require you some time and development.
First one would be to fork the bitcoin core code from github, or some other crypto currency. There might be an guide or you could just swich a name and call it other name but keep everything the same, it all depends on what are you planing to do with it.
Easiest would be, if you want you own based crypto currency, to make a token on ethereum network as it is easier than creating your own alt with it's own network.
