I met an old classmate today, and after hanging out for a while, I said a good joke. Her response was a small laugh accompanied by saying, "You are less annoying than I thought you'd be by now." I genuinely didn't know how to feel about that, and I just mentally noted it down as the weirdest compliment I've received so far in my life. What's yours?
Is that really a complement ? because i thought that is a REAL TALK instead  lol

But I have not remember any weird complement maybe because i hate chitchats , i only talk with someone with important matter and not with nonsense talks.

try to meet that friend again mate and prove him that you are different from being annoying .

Yes just like me over the years I stopped keeping of friends who character in jokes don't malign or align with me to avoid some frank that may provoke me,  because of that I hardly remember the last time I hard such and I limited myself pushing conversation that can leads to such word which look annoying. The best is to go and prove but where as you can't bear it.

Well this is a different compliment to get from the girl. But I do not think you can become sad with it. Maybe she does like you and wants to be your good friend.
I believe they are classmate so its given to be a friend because they will never hangout
meeting just like that , I believe what the girl mean here is that wayback in their school
days, the classmate though he is more annoying but its not and i believe this is a complement .

I did get told I looked like a person. And when I did google this person it was a famous person who made bad life choices. I said I only do look like him not act like him.

i think you should be proud because like what he said YOU LOOKED LIKE meaning you
are as handsome as that person .

This is who we are.
Recently I've heard a trend of compliments that diminish the giver. As the receiver of the compliment, there isn't a way to accept the compliment without acknowledging some self critical reference to the one offering it. Or of course try to repay the compliment immediately to compensate for the givers perceived inadequacy.

You’d have to be specific about what you consider “weird”? Because there are weird normal and harmless compliments out there. I remember one saying my nose scrunch was cute. It was weird because I had never really thought about it before I did not even know I did that.

However there are definitely weird borderline offensive compliments from here and there. A lot about physical appearance especially the body. Sometimes, people just need to shut up and not make any comments about anyone’s physical appearance. It makes a lot of people uncomfortable and hyperaware of what they look like.

This is a very classic backhanded compliment. I wouldn’t even consider this a compliment. I mean why say this to someone? It’s a little rude, in my opinion. They could have said something else like “I really like the way you are now” or “You really became well” or something in the lines of that. Do not try and make excuses for other people’s rude comments. Accept it for what it is.

If your old classmate thought you were so annoying you'd never change, this is a compliment.

In some cultures, telling that you've become fat is both, a compliment and an insult. And also, the opposite of it being told that you've reduced weight and you look slimmer is also the same, a compliment but also an insult.

This is for some cultures that I've seen like in South Korea. But if someone tells me that I've become fat, I've been used to it.

It's a compliment to me if they say that I become look slimmer and hopefully that it becomes more of a reality.

You are distinguishing positive/negative based on your imagination. I'm not that friend of yours so I'm not sure about the intention behind it but you can frankly ask about it with the other person.

In the case that happened to me, there is nothing strange, perhaps I prefer to hear appreciation rather than unrealistic things. Like a teacher once said "you tried but it wasn't enough" Smiley I was really happy when I realized how much it means to have satisfaction and gratitude from these messages through language communication. Anyway, sometimes it can be doubtful to distinguish things that we imagine in different directions, but perhaps we should also go back and live fully with the things going on around us without clinging to something that someone offers.
Well to be honest, saying "you tried but it wasn't enough" is pretty far from weird. It's infact a way of motivating you to do better so credit to your teacher there. My post here however, is referring to those kinda compliments that you didn't know whether to interpret as either positive or negative. The ones that just fall in-between.
