It is just the latest fad to come along and just another means for cryptocurrency creators to advertise their scams coins. It encourages people to buy in the early stages, generates later publicity and gives people the idea that they have "earned" a bonus. It's all about generating new business and making as much money as possible with the illusion of added value.

If you open the "Altcoin-Announcements" section these days, it is impossible not to see the sudden surge of new e-tokens (eBTC, eLTC, eDash, eXRP,...).

They all got a few things in common (other than starting with an e). ERC20 tokens, airdrops, not much content really. Why are they all appearing at the same time? Is this a running gag or anything I missed?

Please enlighten me.
you mentioned an collection of shit coins.
Their purpose is not clear and has no usefulness, just ignore it.

If the only purpose is to create hype and dump, I don't really see any long term value in it. This is what outsider might call a SCAM and leads to the previous ICO bans. Maybe there will always be a market of pure speculation in the growth of crypto but eventually market will have to correct to the value path.

It's just super easy to create a token called e-whatever. So why not create something with a known coin name in it like eBitcoin eLitecoin an so on, do airdrop, hype it and dump your dev coins when it reaches exchanges Wink
in order to reach exchange one need to invest in some dev, marketing and a lot of time.
will it create hype? may be ...
