You can run two coins on one machine. Just make a copy of your appdata or .coin folder, edit the ports so they have different port numbers (port=1111 and port=1112 for example)
Now start the coins with --datadir option to point each to their own datadir and with a --connect=127.0.0.1:1111 and 127.0.0.1:1112

These clients usually use a DNS lookup to find peers that are considered 'stable' to jumpstart the network. I think the IRC method has been deprecated. You can use --addnode="192.168.1.1" when starting the client assuming those methods fail.

If it's on an exchange you can go in the chat and ask for a node someone will hook you up. Forum thread too.
If there's not DNS seed nodes or IRC discovery and you can't get a connection you can either fork your own chain for fun, or do something better with your time.
If you never connected (downloaded the genesis) I'm not sure if you can even do that.

You need two nodes for it to work. Set up two miners, either on same computer or separate. One connection to the host won't work.

Ask in the forum who has the block chain have them fire up the client and add their IP to your config file.

Easy, connect two computers in your LAN, and start mining, all will sync'ed up.
Now, if someone else connects to you, if his chain is longer, yours may be overwritten. If yours longer, then you prevail.

i was asking about getting connection like ptp connections.Getting the first clients to connect to each other
