It’s always difficult to walk away when you’re on a winning streak. The rush of adrenaline will drive the compulsive gambler to place risker bet. And if it is a casino game where the odds are always against the player then chances of losing becomes even higher. This phrase holds true- walk away before you throw your money away.

Just walk out when your budget set for your gambling get over. But here where a real challenge comes in. Mind always runs here and there at the end of each play. It can be for those who win and who loose as well. If your day is good and you have earned something, then better to get out with what you have earned instead of extending your games with what you own. Its the responsibility of each one limit himself to what extend he can go.

There is an old song called "Thee Gambler" that goes like this (snipped part), by Kenny Rogers if I am not wrong.
,

Knowing when to hold'em, knowing when to foldèm are usually part of your ability, training and experience when playing poker or other games that have some math to it, my question for the forum is how do you know it is the time "to walk away" and I also hope that you never get to the point that you need to know "when to run".

Most people nowadays will be playing online poker, which means reading someones face and being able to call a bluff based on it is impossible. Of course it still works if you're playing in a real world casino. It is like any skill that someone has passion enough to acquire and master - many years of playing against many people, constantly learning and developing your game can end up building an intuition. As for the online poker rooms, most of the time it is about properly calculating pot odds and simply grinding. If you're lucky, you can come across many fish who will slowly hand over their money to you, if you're skilled enough to apply pressure at the opportune moments.

in my opinion when the person is having many successive defeats or even defeats that cause the bankroll to start to reduce a lot in a short time, then the person needs to urgently stop playing to be able to rest and think better about the next step in order to be able to have good results and recover the bankroll and make profits. consecutive losses cause stress and lead to despair, it is important to rest and for that the person needs to stop for some time
You wouldnt notice that until you dont able to pull off some money into your pocket for you to make use of your gambling activity.People wont realize it if they wont really be experiencing problems.

If you dont like on ending up on that way then better to have some good control and you should know on when to stop if its needed and always mind off about gambling as a form of entertainment not a source of income.

Walk away if you do notice that you are spending that much.Walk away if you do find out yourself already been stressed or becoming impulsive.

I think it would be easy for you to know that you need to walk away is if you allot a certain amount of bankroll before you play. So you only deposit the amount you can afford to lose. Once the bankroll is depleting, don't be tempted to deposit again because you already set yourself for that amount. It means, your game is about to end. For me, that's the easiest way to know when to stop. I only deposit the amount that I can freely spend, without worrying that I maybe spending funds for my bills.

(this song looks like an outpouring heart to me lol) i'm not good at playing poker but i'm a slot maniac.....until now the way i avoid big losses when i play slot is to really stop and not play with savings, emergency money or borrowed money.  those who play with emergency savings or loans definitely have a target to double their money but it is a mind trap because what happens is they lose the money and suffer losses.  (gambling is very happy and entertaining when playing with free money)

For me it's very hard to decide when to take a break from gambling. Usually after a big win or a big loss I take a quick break to see if it makes sense to keep gambling or better call it a night.
You have answered for yourself when is the right time to stop or take a break from gambling and that is after big wins and losing streaks. If you are too eager to win more after winning, you may end up throwing away all your winning simply because you are obsessed with bigger wins. Likewise when you really want to win a bet after a losing streak, you forget that you have neglected the risk of further losses if you want to continue. Quitting is an option, and coming back tomorrow or after.
Same with me, if I've already experienced a lot of loss and am stressed about it, it's time to go because I know it'll all go bad if I keep going. It's the same in trading; learn to stop investing at inopportune times, take a break, and clear your head so you can make the best judgment possible on when to enter and exit. Learn to make excellent decisions while gambling in order to get beneficial outcomes, such as not losing a lot of money after a gambling activity. It's preferable to lose a game but not lose a lot of money than to lose a game and lose a lot of money due to gambling.

I have done this very easily for the past many years, only because I didn't know when to walk out back in the day and lost so much money. I just put a limit for how much I will gamble and if I lose that then I do not deposit again.

This is what everyone else should do, have a bankroll management and gamble with whatever you have and if you do end up with a loss then do not just deposit money again and again, that just doesn't make any sense at all, it would lead to you losing until you do not have any more money left, there should be a stop. Which is why put a limit for yourself, whatever it is for you, for everyone that changes and the number changes, but aside from that you will definitely be able to handle whatever you have, just use the money you deposited and nothing more, I do that and I have been doing fine so far without any problem.

I believe it's time to walk away when the game stops being entertaining and starts becoming a duty. That is when things may get out of control for the gambler, so it's better for him to be aware about this situation and walk away soon as possible before it becomes too late. It's not an easy task for every gamblers, but if they watch themselves while playing it's possible to manage money and time accurately when gambling.

It's easy to know the timing but when i'm in that very moment it's difficult to execute knowing you could continue and make more profits then i'd get greedy and lose it all. Aside from knowing the best decision you also need to have some consistency because even if you know when to stop or walk away you still get that temptation to gamble. Tracking your bets from one site to the other is also another good way to know when to stop I think i've said this in another thread but having your own list gives you that realization.
Greed is the primary reason on why most gamblers or players do really fail on this one even though you are already aware on whats going on but you would really be having that thought that. What if i do play more?
I could possibly break even or make wins even more and this is where the  story starts.

Walking away would  be most likely to happen when someone got broke or already have no money into their pockets.Only a few could able to walk away and could able to stop when theyre winning
or to those who do already spent their budget.

Walk if you already on your limit and wont go past with that.

This song tells about "disciplined".

If we reflect on the message of the song, we will understand that we should not use our emotion in gambling, instead, use the strategy and follow it with discipline. Additionally, knowing when to walk away, whether you lose or win is very important. Also, it might not only speak on poker, but any gambling game you are playing, you should know when to walk away.

,
Quote
He said, "Son, I've made a life
Out of readin' people's faces
Knowin' what the cards were
By the way they held their eyes
So if you don't mind my sayin'
I can see you're out of aces
For a taste of your whiskey
I'll give you some advice"

...

Quote
"If you're gonna play the game, boy
You gotta learn to play it right
You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done

Knowing when to hold'em, knowing when to foldèm are usually part of your ability, training and experience when playing poker or other games that have some math to it, my question for the forum is how do you know it is the time "to walk away" and I also hope that you never get to the point that you need to know "when to run".
First time seeing a poem that talks about gambling haha. About your question, honestly, recently you'll just realize that it is already time to walk away because your balance are already gone Cheesy That's a bad case, however being more disciplined, I think you should set yourself the limit so that you'll know when it is enough.

... my question for the forum is how do you know it is the time "to walk away" and I also hope that you never get to the point that you need to know "when to run".
It's easy for me to walk away during a game when I got nothing left since I limit my gambling budget.

Walking away when you're winning is more difficult than what others may think. I hope you don't mean those you beat will be chasing you with a deadly weapon when you said "know when to run". It sounds funny when you hear those kind of stories but it's actually scary when you see them in person.

It's harder to quit when you feeling it, when you are being dictated by greed, thinking that luck will continue to be there for you.

The  reason there's  some saying " Much better to stop when you already have some profits, than quitting because your wallet was emptied."

Though there are also experienced gamblers who are intact with their plans, knowing when to stop on both ends. Tough, but that's their advantage against regular gamblers who mostly lose their money from activity.

I would never forget the message of this song, as a gambler, we could always relate on this.

The words that really struck me are.

Quote
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done

Sometimes I got too excited, I count my winnings when I'm still gambling, which I realize it's not a good idea as I got greedier every time I do that.
What I learn is to always put a target of winning when gambling and a limit of what you could risk only.

I think everyone would have a different opinion on when to walk away. For someone it would be as soon as they have lost their budget.
For some it would be little past their budget and for someone it would be until they have lost it all.
Knowing when to walk away is a good skill to have because it can save us a lot of money that we would have probably lost.
For me the right time to walk away would be when I have lost my budget for gambling.

I have developed a rule for myself when gambling the meaning of which is that I leave the game if I manage to increase my deposit by 40-50%. This simple rule helps me not only to enjoy the game, but also to stay with the winnings, though not so often.

Very nice! But I don't think it'll work for me because that's when my greediness kicks in. I can't control or manage my emotions, so I've decided to stop playing. I remember my first time gambling at a carnival, I couldn't sleep that night and I really wanted to go back, so for a week I was always there playing those color games, sometimes winning, sometimes losing, but the excitement was always there. If I win 100 percent of my bet, I usually double it, so I end up losing.

Of course, one thing is for sure, that is, don't use greed and emotion as a means of relying on yourself.
actually things like this are not just for gambling but maybe for everything we do.
at least with us being aware and not getting carried away into emotions and greed we can limit ourselves so that we can determine with a clear head what actions to take so as not to become mistakes and become regrets.
because a person will not be able to stop doing when they have been overcome by emotions and greed.
so know yourself first and don't use your emotions and greed so you can know where to go and where to stop.

Loving the beat and the lyrics of this song to be honest, this looks like the best gambling country song we ever have. This is the kind of song that looks like it comes from experience. Well, to walk away is I guess when you're winning and not wanting more or you're losing and you'll chase them, more like this is what the song was made for.
You also should know when to walk away when you're constantly losing remember that money is everything in this world so there's time to walk away when you lose and when you win. I haven't hheard of this song yet but I do know Kenny Rogers, seems a fitting song for gambling.

That's the most hardest part. You continue winning and you will stop thinking its enough for today and you walk away.

But when you are on the losing streak, your stop thinking logically and the only thing in your mind is to play more and more to recover the loss and it never happens. If you are able to walk away, when you initially started losing, you're a champ indeed.

Since we are talking about poker there is at least one scenario in which the best decision is to walk away, in order to make money in poker then you need to have a few players that are below the average level of the table, if that is not the case and everyone has more or less the same level then the money is just going to move back and forth while the house makes money with the rake and everyone else losses money, so if you see the table and you guess the table has the same level as you or even higher then that is the moment to walk away from that cash poker game.

For me, it's the matter of how many loses have I accumulated in a row, if it's more than what I put into my mind then I know that I will have to walk out of the game before I lose too much. Also, knowing that you have other responsibilities that need those money can help you walk out of the game early or entirely.

I guess this kind of situation depends on the gambler. Normally, when a gambler is faced with consecutive losses on his bets, the first thing that would come to his mind is to bet again in order to recover those losses. Once they gain that advantage, they tend to bet again until they repeat the same cycle over and over again.

The best time to walk away is when you actually run out of money! I mean, if you were to gamble, try your best to bring only a handful amount of money for that day. When you are satisfied with the amount that you brought, the only time that would convince a gambler to run away is when they have exhausted all of their money.

While I do agree that it sounds crazy, but having a goal (i.e. doubling your money for tonight, etc.) can lower your expectations which would lead you to betting over your budget.

If you mean quitting then you are losing everything, the hardest thing is to walk away, gambling is very addictive, when you are at it and you are having fun, it's hard to walk away, it takes a lot of courage to walk away although it's worth to walk away early many gamblers walk away when it's already late.

If we are talking about poker and this is a tournament, then we need to play to the end (no other options are provided), if about a regular game, then an increase in my bankroll by 5 times will be enough for me to quit the game. That is, if I increased my bankroll 6 times, then I can continue to play, but if the profit drops to five times, then it's time to finish.

I think this opinion is very personal, there are those who play poker just for fun and only leave when they lose everything.
There are others who go to make money but can't stop playing, while others drop out when they're still on top.
I think that everything is valid, since of course you don't owe anything and don't risk losing what you can't bet on the game.

It takes a lot of experience to read the face of someone holding his cards learn them having no ace. But I think I have seen this movie. I have the appetite for western movies really which I sometimes look up on youtube.

Its a situation where the gambler won a stash of money after a hero call. After he won, he wants to stop playing but the other guy dont want him to stop and pull out a gun. It didnt help because he stood up saying enough and walk.

I guess it means, if you are winning learn to stop and time to walk.

I would not know really when, if you really enjoy gambling I guess it's the people around you that will tell you when you need to walk away, gamblers are always in denial they don't want to be stopped on things they enjoy and they are excited on doing, even to do the extend of putting in their fortune, and divorcing their wife, for me, I can always walk away I have self-control and knows my limitation, I'm old enough and knows my priority.

Honestly I will not sing or play the song on my children Grin, even though I am a gambler but I do not want my children to follow what I have done and I will try to keep them away from gambling.
I got into gambling a few years ago and have probably lost quite a lot and maybe it's time to run (stop) as the lyrics of the song suggest, I think the song has a message deep enough for a gambler to have control strong self when playing the game.

I'd say it all boils down to having the experience to promptly and correctly assess the situation. That only comes with time and effort and lots of trial and error. So for you to come to that point, you would have to miss that point a bunch of times before.

Knowing when to hold'em, knowing when to foldèm are usually part of your ability, training and experience when playing poker or other games that have some math to it, my question for the forum is how do you know it is the time "to walk away" and I also hope that you never get to the point that you need to know "when to run".

Mathematics and psychology. Preferably in good combination.

The principle of poker is, on the one hand, to be able to read the behavior of the other players, and on the other hand, to be able to calculate very quickly the probability of winning a hand with all the information I have. On the basis of these two factors, depending on the game situation, it is then necessary to weigh up whether to hold or fold.

I know when to walk away while I still have some spare money for food.  Grin I've been there before playing an open poker room when I was still younger and when there's no such thing as pandemic I still visit there biweekly. I don't think they are still running with all the health and safety protocols.
If some players brings their ATM cards, gold bracelets or other things with value just for emergencies or if they want to gamble more, I just go there with the money I want to spend and if I lose, I always have a spare just so I could still eat before going home. Food lessens the thought of losing, in my case.  Grin
I loss a lot of times because I am not really that pro in poker but I do love the bonding of players in the room and I guess that is what I enjoyed the most and if I win that will be a bonus.

This song doesn't relate poker, it looks like a common song for entire form of gambling. When you don't know when to stop and walk away then it'll be a loss. Maybe a few out of luck profit as they don't stop even after knowing it is the time to walk away.

The song does relate to poker too. The author/composer used the poker terms as a reference to express every thoughts he had.
The song isn't limited to gambling as well, It could be expressed in our journey of life daily.
But, because we're in a gambling discussion, I guess I have to agree that the song is for gamblers to realize when to stop and when to proceed in all forms of gambling activities.
It just so happens that the poker reference could pretty much relate to all forms of gambling.

Split your money up at least 7 ways for a daily spend, its harder to do over a month or longer but never gamble just one instance if you have any kind of ambition to win games.  Dont rush, have a budget for the day and if you are not winning you will get the simplest signal in the world to leave which is your balance wont be there to continue.  I'd say its far harder to decide when you do well when to bank some of the gains and walk away then also, probably just when you are tired and feel yourself slipping at all.   Stick to your system Smiley

Sums up most of that things though, I do believe that when you loose more and 80% of your initial investment, you should realize that the luck is not on your side and then walk away. At the same time it is really hard to do so because you are in the moment waiting to win all your money back, but for me if I do reach a point like that, I usually stop.
The ego and the greed are two things that you gotta avoid. These two things would make your loose everything, even more than what you might be fighting for therefore, realize when that's happening and then just close the tab for a while and maybe try some other day.

Have a goal in mind - once you cross that line, take profits and enjoy yourself a pint.

Also similarly, sit down and write on a piece of paper what your stop loss is.

This way, you keep yourself accountable and are more likely to not have to walk away with the mindset of "just one more bet". You should be celebrating any win that you get as opposed to sulking that you didn't win more. The latter mindset is what kills players.

I never heard of this song before, nice lyrics, looks like a real gambling poem... I like it.

Quote
For a taste of your whiskey
I'll give you some advice

Every piece of advice has to be paid, in one or another way! I like this part, it's like that in life. I guess the advice from the song is generally good, learning how to apply them while gambling in moments of excitement is the hard part. Who can do that can hope to become a pro gambler one day whit a nice bankroll and high stakes!

I think it's time to walk once you have reached the limit you set on your own. There's just something that you can do with it if you know when to do it. Believing in something that you need to do is the step that everyone needs to do. It's like knowing your limit and acting on it as well.

Running should be immediately understood once you experienced it. You wouldn't want to reach this point.

There is an old song called "Thee Gambler" that goes like this (snipped part), by Kenny Rogers if I am not wrong.

Knowing when to hold'em, knowing when to foldèm are usually part of your ability, training and experience when playing poker or other games that have some math to it, my question for the forum is how do you know it is the time "to walk away" and I also hope that you never get to the point that you need to know "when to run".

I know this song and i would guess that a lot of people know this song in here because this is an all time classic and even if you are not into country music you probably have heard this song at least once in your life. This song is also used in the trailer of zack snyders movie "army of the dead". I would say that it is obviously very hard to know when to fold your cards and when to hold them because you would need to know what your cards your opponents are having too. So most of the time you know if you should have folded or hold the cards only in retrospect.
Knowing when to walk away is easier in my opinion because you just need discipline to do that. Just set some limits before you start and once you have lost or won a certain amount of money, then it is time to walk away.

You know it's time to walk away from gambling when it has started interfering with your life and decisions such that you now attach more importance to gambling than other activities.

Another pointer to walk away is when you have been in an unending streak of losses such that it has eaten a big hole into your pocket and is now wanting to cause you depression, in this case of you can run away, you run.

It is not easy however for some to just walk away from a thing like gambling especially if they've been intertwined with it for a while, if you fall into that category that even with all the pointers to walk away, and just can't or couldn't, it is best you seek medical help and join a self care group.

Very difficult to walk away, however, I do always question myself when gambling, and most of the time it's effective to me and I simply just walk away because I already have made a good profit, regardless.

I don't want to put myself in the position to lose my winning and then my capital. I'm not really sure if this made sense to others because usually our decision is clouded. But questioning myself most of the time are very effective to grasp what is going on.

For me, it's the matter of how many loses have I accumulated in a row, if it's more than what I put into my mind then I know that I will have to walk out of the game before I lose too much. Also, knowing that you have other responsibilities that need those money can help you walk out of the game early or entirely.

Gambler's have this I'll get it or I'll win next time mindset, as long as you have this mindset I don't think walking away is your option, if you are deep into gambling somebody have to walk it for you, in my case I can walk away anytime I'm not deep into gambling and as long as I have other interest that is better than gambling, I can walk anytime.

If you are into gambling and you are a chronic gambler it's almost impossible to walk away, when it comes to walking away it depends on how deep you are into gambling.

You already mentioned it, knowing when to walk or run is part of our ability as we build experience therefore we will just know how to call it once we think it's ready to deploy it.

For when is the specific time to do it, it depends on the game situation so I can't say exactly when as there are lots of instances in strategy-based gambling games.

Anyways, my response has nothing to do with the song but only on dealing with gambling in general.

There's no clear indication now is there? Imo you just know it. It just hits you or something, makes you realize that it's time to well, stop. Heck, most people just stop because they run out of money, but really, if you have enough and just continuously play, there would become a point where you'd just stop and realize that well, it's over (gambling itself). Well if you ever get to the point where you need to run, then you're clearly of the former people where you just keep on gambling, always keeping your money balance close to zero, and clearly, it didn't actually hit you, probably because of adrenaline or something.

One of my favorite folk singer , and also one of my favorite song(actually it is my fathers favorite that become mine also over the time)

My father never gamble in His entire life that is why he is sudden when he finds out that i become on , he keeps telling me that to become a successful gambler is to Know when to stand the table.

for me(or for my father rather) the right time to stand is when you think it is enough , either winning or losing but with your self control and presence of mind , you will never become greedy and will always be contented .

This song doesn't relate poker, it looks like a common song for entire form of gambling. When you don't know when to stop and walk away then it'll be a loss. Maybe a few out of luck profit as they don't stop even after knowing it is the time to walk away.

Taking an opinion poll it'll be clear to see, majority of the gamblers could've turned their life into disaster through gambling and only 5-10% successful out of gambling. This might be out of luck and mathematical understanding.

,
Quote
He said, "Son, I've made a life
Out of readin' people's faces
Knowin' what the cards were
By the way they held their eyes
So if you don't mind my sayin'
I can see you're out of aces
For a taste of your whiskey
I'll give you some advice"

...

Quote
"If you're gonna play the game, boy
You gotta learn to play it right
You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done
