I don't know why it is not functioning these past few days but here's an alternative.
Theymos responded to a similar inquiry some days ago with a general reply:
The index is being rebuilt. It's taking a little longer than I remembered from last year: it might actually be tomorrow or the next day before it's done...
The process is most certainly still being worked on as it's still down, so, for now, the forum Google search option is the alternative (it's actually my most preferred of the two options). Probable check back at the end of today.

If you are searching for bitcointalk website with some keywords from an external search engine, be sure you are visiting the real bitcointalk website that is https://bitcointalk.org
There are many fake websites that looks same like this and has a similar name that sometimes comes up better on search page than the official site. These fake sites are mostly created to steal your password.

If what you're trying to find is something general and not board-specific/user-specific I think Google custom search is good enough.

Duckduckgo is another option but from my experience, sometimes you have to spend more effort to find what you need.

I don't know why it is not functioning these past few days but here's an alternative.

As of now I am using Brave Browser and my default search engine is duckduckgo.com as I prefer privacy using the internet. GOOGLE SUCKS. Whenever I wanted to search something outside the forum. I usually type "bct", "bitcointalk" or "site:https://bitcointalk.org" after the term I am looking for. Honestly, using search engines outside the forum is better than using forums search engine as it might give you a wide variety of results.

Here's an example.
Code:
erc20 site:https://bitcointalk.org
