This is what I don't get.... the community should know exactly where those MtGox coins are through the blockchain right? Or did these coins get "lost" where no one can access it?

If they got lost then we will only have about 20million BTC in existence and the remaining BTC should increase in value right?

OR... maybe the guys who stole the MtGox BTC put those BTCs though address mixer websites that help coins lose track on the blockchain?

But it's not like people haven't thought about this... so if you know the quirks and details, Please respond.

See this thread: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/what-happened-to-the-missing-gox-coins-494695

11 wallets uncovered so far that have solid probability they are under GOX's control. 270,000 bitcoins in them ($154.5million USD)

those 11 wallets are nothing in this case.

Transactions from 2011, and some others. Those are not any proofs.

Did you read this in conjunction with it? http://letstalkbitcoin.com/the-ghost-in-the-machine-at-mtgox/#.UxJcd-NdUhN

It has been claimed that the theft was done by hackers who manipulated the BTC withdrawal transactions issued by MtGOX in such a way that the transaction succeeded but MtGOX was led to believe that it hadn't, so it credited the amount back to the client's account.

Has anyone identified any specific instance of this "malleate and get refunded" trick being used?  Or is that just a theory made up by the "crowd detectives"?

Despite being incomprehensibly vague (giving people reasons to dig for the truth) this is the official line coming from Mark Karpeles as to how over 750,000 Bitcoins were lost.

Has anybody actually located the 800,000 or so BTC supposedly stolen from Mt. Gox on the blockchain?

I am sure that attackers deposit stolen BTC on multiple wallets. So it would be harder to find Smiley

I think they did though about that Tongue

IMO, nothing has been stolen from GOX. I think they f*cked up and have lost the access keys.

There is a post here that so far, if proved to be confirmed, which it looks pretty damn close to me, accounts for 270,000 bitcoins CURRENTLY sitting in wallets controlled by MTGOX. That leaves about 580,000 bitcoins unaccounted for.

There is an interesting post about mtgox clients trying to retrace their deposits :

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.5451195

And there is also this other thread about that : https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.5451149

If it was stolen (by an mtgox employee, one or more outsiders), they can easily hide them and launder them so it seems kind of useless to trace them but you never know, there is probably way more in this fiasco that what meets the eye

I think I am about to find out, if there is a way to find out I will find it, since I think that anyone that steals bitcoin  is a "defamer" of the currency, and I am going to find out who is DOING THIS TO DISCREDIT OUR NEW AND WONDERFUL DIGITAL CURRENCY!

I don't believe Gox very much. Anything could have happened.

I do hope the Bitcoin Foundation put their expertise into this for the sake of the investigation.

After all that was made of the blockchain providing a transparent record of every transaction, in front of the US hearings this year and last year.

Good question. From what I understand of blockchain transparency a determined sleuth should be able to deduce which wallet these coins wound up in. "Lost" doesn't really happen in proper crypto currency does it? Huh
