Be careful in choosing where to join because some of it is just created without any information when you go to the linked they give like Twitter. meanwhile there ane many sites beside here in the altcoin announcement thread where you can find the newest airdrops. just use goole and search for airdrops (first proposal is not bad). also good sources are twitter and telegramm with their only for airdrops created channels. good luck an have fun!

Hard forks are the only way to get airdrops. So, buy some Bitcoin then wait for a hard fork, hope that it takes effect and you'll get your airdrop of the coin that represents the fork of the original blockchain.
You may be thinking of bounties offered by new currencies or via intial coin offerings. These aren't airdrops, they're compensation for advertising the existence of the new coin OR advertising the ICO event. To participate in those you need to join a bounty campaign for the ICO. But note that most of these ICOs become worthless. You can't do anything with the coins if there isn't a wallet and exchange to support it. Even airdrops from hardforks are only as useful as the network of wallets and exchanges that exists to support it.
