I do have that key...but not sure how to use it
AFAIK, coinkite doesn't allow for the export of private keys.

What does your private key start with? If it doesn't start with 5, L or K, you are out of luck. It isn't a private key.
Well, if Coinkite didn't allow to export the private keys, then Im very sorry RodeKroet but you money are lost.
I never used coinkite so I couldn't know, but if ranochigo says the truth, then there is no possibility to retrieve you money from there, but I would still suggest to contact their support and maybe they will review your case and give back the coins, because 0.5 is a big sum.

You need to know all account details to do this, they surely won't give them back if you cannot answer them for a every single question.
Obviously they shouldn't ask you about password but about other sensitive data, I wonder if you will be able to have them back.

That is great!
Now you will be able to recover your 0.5 bitcoins.

All you have to do, is go to electrum and launch it.
Now,click on the "wallet" tab on the upper side of the interface.
You will see "Private keys" in there. Point your cursor on it, and you will see two possible options: "Sweep" and "Export".
Click on "Sweep" option, and then you just copy paste the private key, which will be saved on the address quoted below the empty place for typing the private key.

That should make a job for you, if you are uncertain of something or you still do not know how to do that, just ask a question.

as the ultimate newbie, having bought 0,5BC in 2013, I found out yesterday Coinkite wallets are gone...I have a new wallet now (Electrum) but have NO idea how to receive my 500mBC in that wallet...Who can help ? Thanks

You have basically only one way you can retrieve the bitcoins you have bought back in 2013.
One is having access to the wallet you have the money at,but you obviously cannot because the wallet service has been closed, so there is only one option to get control on your bitcoins back.

You need to be able to import the private key that was on the previous Coinkite wallet, this way you can get access to your money through the other wallet service (e.g Electrum).
But if you do not have the private key, then Im afraid you dont have any choice but just to accept that your 0.5 bitcoin are floating somewhere there, in the web.
