I've put mining rigs in both public spaces and in my bedroom. Bedroom is a bad idea, a 9 GPU mining rig will make money, but good sleep will make you far more based on how much more efficient you'll be at your active income generation. Don't sacrifice that for $20/day passive income.

If you know what you're doing, it's ok to put it in a bedroom though. I have a 6 gpu system I build in a 4U rackmount server case that is inside a X-Rack Pro 4U noise cancelling case (http://www.xrackpro.com/v/vspfiles/xrackpro4U.htm) with extra fans installed under the air filter on the intake to increase static pressure. The output fan blows straight out my window through ducting pipe. That keeps it quiet and cool. However, I had that stuff laying around so I did not have to invest anything into it (the xrack case runs around $80-$100 used).

For an open air rig, heat distribution is not easy since it tends to localize around the rig. In order to keep it cool you'll need a large box fan blowing the heat out a window at all times. That is definitely not recommended.

Also having trouble with right place to put 6 GPUs rig. Is it really critical to not put it in bedroom, even if there's enough space and noise isn't a problem?

I would suggest the living room as well, especially as you intend to use it as a supplemental source of heat. The larger square footage will  allow the heat to be maintained at a more comfortable level otherwise locked in the small bedroom you would probably need the window open to cool the rig and little heat would be used for the rest of the apartment.

Often, miners place their machines in the lowest temperatures in their homes. The location is usually attic, large warehouse or someone places it on the toilet where the temperature is lower than other places.

I'm thinking that putting the rig in the bigger room would be better from an energy standpoint during winter. There is more space to heat, more ways to get air in or out and the thermostat is there. There are several things to consider but my brain is fried at the moment and I'm very open to opinions since I'm still new to this and not all that smart to begin with.

I guess you have to put it in the place where you or your children will not brake it  Wink
And where some fresh and cold air is available.
So maybe near a window of living room?

Airflow uber alles.

I can set the voltage, fan speed, max temperature, memory clock and core clock on my Nvidia cards.  I have the temperature set pretty low so they don't throw off that much heat compared to when they are at stock speeds.  A suggestion for your setup, since you have 3 windows in your living room, get at least one box fan and set your rig near the window and  the box fan between the rig and the window, set so it draws air from the apartment, over your rig and out the window.  Of course you only need to do this if heat becomes a problem.

Do not even think of keeping it in the bedroom, find a quiet place in your living room where you get maximum air flow.

A 9 GPUs rig is compact, quiet and it releases not much instant heat, but I still suggest you put it in living room for more air circulation.
I ever installed 2 rigs with 12 GPUs in a small bed room which has a large window (size ~130cmx100cm), so now I have to deal with cooling and ventilation.

You don't want to sleep with a mining rig.  Find a spot no one will bump into it or drop something on it in the living room.

So I can't for the life of me make up my own mind right now where I'm going to be putting this 9 gpu rig I'm building. I can either put this thing in my living room or my bedroom. Here are some room details that I'm weighing the pros and cons of for mining this winter.

Living room

  • ~700 square feet with an attached kitchen space
  • largest room in the apartment more air circulation
  • 3 windows that can be opened or closed as needed
  • 2 doors, front door and balcony door w/ in and out traffic
  • thermostat for the whole apartment is in this room

Bedroom

  • ~100 square feet
  • no thermostat
  • low traffic
  • 1 window that can be opened or closed as needed
  • poor air circulation

I'm thinking that putting the rig in the bigger room would be better from an energy standpoint during winter. There is more space to heat, more ways to get air in or out and the thermostat is there. There are several things to consider but my brain is fried at the moment and I'm very open to opinions since I'm still new to this and not all that smart to begin with.
