I think sticking with the big three:

- CryptoXchange -> http://cryptoxchange.com/
- Mtgox -> https://mtgox.com/
- TradeHill -> https://www.tradehill.com/

 and using https://www.bitinstant.com/ to speed it up is currently the easiest, fastest and safest way to buy and sell coins.

I'm a little intimidated at the prospect of joining an exchange (looks like I'll have to go through two or three middle men before I can actually get any money in) and I don't intend on day trading or speculating, so I was thinking about using prepaid debit cards on get-bitcoin.com.

Any advice?

If you use one of the exchanges you will always get a better price. If you are not buying/selling regularly you may not care about this so it is up to you to decide.

Regarding the "best place to buy", any of the top exchanges are good. I vote for CampBX. They have excellent support and a nice interface to buy/sell coins.

I buy decent amounts of BTC from MtGox regularly.

I pay by wire.  My bank is Chase.  If I make a wire during the day, it shows up on MtGox that evening (since that's the next day in Japan).  Of course, that only works if the next day in Japan is a business day.

MemoryDealers sells a 1000 BTC physical bitcoin bar.  It has a markup of about 13 or 14 percent.  I am virtually certain that if you offer to pay by wire transfer instead of by credit card or paypal, you WILL get a meaningful discount.

I think TradeHill rocks!  Nice interface, though a bit sloppy with the charts.  Love the duo-security!

I vote Tradehill. Tradehill is very simple, and if something goes wrong, they have amazing customer service, and will fix it as soon as possible.

I'm also unsure as to the best place to buy BTC.

My first coins I bought from Coinpal (obviously not an option anymore) back in April. (Funny thing is, I completely missed the bubble and when I started paying attention to Bitcoin again they were at roughly the same price I bought them at Tongue)

I'm a little intimidated at the prospect of joining an exchange (looks like I'll have to go through two or three middle men before I can actually get any money in) and I don't intend on day trading or speculating, so I was thinking about using prepaid debit cards on get-bitcoin.com.

Any advice?

Crypto X Change may be the best if you want coins quickly at good price. But, they launch on the 30th I think, after a trial period until then.

If you go a different route (with a different exchange), getting the steps set up will take about a week anyway... so yeah I'd recommend to be patient for a week and open an account with Crypto X Change on the 30th, you'll have your coins about 24 hours after that.
