It is better to start with just one or two cards. After you succeed in the two cards system, then increase the cards.

i'd just order some video cards from amazon and call it a day

Without knowing your budget it is hard to give you a good answer, but if u're new to mining, i would definitely recommend starting it off with one good
card like rx480, if you can upgrade your current PC with it, and work from there.

To build a real mining rig, user robertkedves provided some very good options that you can check out. The main thing is not to underestimate the power drain the rig will make.

- on the MBO (dont place 3 gpu's in pcie slots directly, place 2 max), put rest of gpu's on risers with external power (buy "powered risers") (I had a case of +12v rail on MBO being fried with 3 cards directly on pciex's)
- don't try to cut back on PSU , buy known good quality brands like corsair,seasonic..etc , and always leave enough "room" between wattage used and PSU capacity. (stability over estimated profit)
- dont spend too much money on CPU,HDD and other parts that are not vital to the mining, you can easily get used ones that will work just fine.
- be realistic when overclocking (once again, stability is what you should value the most as rig owner)
- dont damage GPU's in any way, and/or replace original cooling , or anything else that will void your warranty (you will need it after about a year or so, mostely for the dead fans..etc.)

There is plenty of information on the web, pretty easy for starters.

You will have problems with drivers, OS, BIOS and so on. Always continue reading and learning from the web.

If you are serious about a mining rig you should do a research on bitcointalk.org and all the coin forums that you want to mine.

I'll write below how can you start mining and what hardware you need.

1. Choose your hardware - here is a good example
Motherboard: AsRock H81 Pro BTC - 70-100$
Risers: 6x PCI 1x to 16X (USB powered are better) - 10-50$
GPU: 6x 480x/380x - depending on your budget - 800-1400$
SSD: you can try with a flash stick (16-32GB) - Windows on it - 20$
RAM: 8, 16GB - 20$
CPU: Celeron - 50-100$
PSU: 1500W or 1x1000W + 1x750W - 150-300$

Once you own the hardware, all you have to do is look up for the coin you want to mine.

2. Install a software specially designed to mine (Claymore, etc)

3. Choose a pool (for pool mining) or solo mining

4. Start cmd.exe (windows) introduce the commands and voila!

5. Enjoy and always adjust your miner, verify the temperature of GPU (the cooler they are, more power you get)

Building an altcoin mining rig doesn't require rocket science. If you are familiar with setting up the hardware, then it's pretty easy for you. All you have to do is to set up a computer with great GPU (I'd recommend RX 480's/470's), but it'd be better if you tell out your budget here. That way, I can tell you better that what to get.
