I think that you can buy them on every crypto exchange that supports Visa API, don't see the problem.
Usually Visa automatically converts your currency to USD that every non-decentralized exchange accepts.

By the way, to have nice profit these days on crypto market I suggest you to use best bitcoin trading bot like 3commas, or coingy.

I've had a look at Coinjar site before, but not sure how reputable they are and if their fees are competitive. Anyone else recommend & use them?

I'm currently using Coinjar and they are pretty decent. I think their fees are the lowest. 1% on each transaction. You can also get a swipe card later. However they do not support all banks for deposits. Commonwealth and Westpac are fine but you can check out the full list on their website. You can deposit through wire transfer, POLi pay and Bpay. They also do not support other altcoins, so what i do is transfer my coinjar bitcoins to other trading platforms like Bittrex to trade Bitcoin to Eth for example. But anyway, i would recommend them.

CoinJar is well known however a 1% trading fee is no longer competitive in the market. You can find better better crypto exchanges in Australia that offer fees from 0.5% This means you get more Bitcoin for your Dollars. Google Swyftx and Independent Reserve.

New to the world of cryptocurrency. Where is the best places to buy Bitcoins & Altcoins with Australian Dollars, preferably with the cheapest fees? It seems all exchanges need you to have Bitcoins to buy Altcoins.

Where are you based?

I could sell you some bitcoins if you are willing to either 1)Generate a cardless cash code from either Westpac, St. George or Commbank for the amount you want to purchase or 2) Make a cash deposit into my commbank account.

We can negotiate rates. LBC escrow is accepted if you amount is over 0.2 BTC. Otherwise i can go with any forum escrow or you can send first. But let me know the amount you are trying to exchange first.

I wouldn't recommend any of the trading sites based in AU, they have quite strict AML and KYC requirements for new users. Trading p2p is the way to go, imo.

For altcoins, you just need to get bitcoin first. I don't think that there are any active exchanges apart from maybe a few with strict KYC requirements that have BTC/ETH or BTC/LTC pairs listed on their site.

You try to check this site:
https://blockcoin.com.au
It will tell you exactly where to go to buy your coins in Australian from any of the major exchanges.

Seems like a decent site which lists the different exchanges that accept Aussie dollars.

The largest exchanger containing network in australia is https://bitcoin.com.au
It is operated in melbourne, a rich developing industry over time.
Is the best exchanher to buy with lowest fee. Buy from different 1200 locations in australia. Also supports qr based transactions.

Seems they charge 5% in fees, that's very high.

Because there is no big market for most altcoins. Is there is any problem on doing Cash > Bitcoin > Altcoin trades?

Try BTCMarkets[1] for BTC, LTC, ETH, ETC and XRP. If you want other altcoins, you will sadly need to buy BTC, send to another exchange like Bittrex and do trading between both coins. Or try to find someone to do P2P trades with them on LocalBitcoin[2].
