The people who are interested in designs would really notice this, but even so, it is pretty clear that people who buy iphones are impressed by its simplistic design and the clean look it has be it on the outside or the interface that the operating system itself is providing. Now, this doesn't mean that there is nothing wrong with being stagnant and being too comfortable because a lot of phone brands are already doing a lot to improve not just overall design but also performance, durability and affordability. We can see that these other brands are experimenting a lot to be more familiar with the taste of the common public which is great. Apple needs to be more serious about this since we already witnessed what happened to Nokia, if they become to comfortable, they might meet the same fate.

Why would someone change its design when it is pleasing and known throughout the world. It might already be their trademark so there is no need to change designs right?

In electronics world, the most essential progress is within its components that is cannot be seen by people unless they open the mobile phones. Design is just a factor for their selling points.

a desktop PC had like 25 years+ as CRT screens
                                20 years+ as LCD
even today desktop computers are usually still over 1foot tall

cellphones however have changed alot.
13 years ago. people laughed when i had a HP ipaq touchscreen with a phone feature.
now its the norm to have touchscreen cellphone
so they still have ~7 years before touchscreen phones are out of date and wearables are common

...
i can imagine a fitbit/smart watch being the main processor and main function device. and people have a roll of  e-paper with a wifisync to use as a large screen for times of need of a larger screen for mobile gaming/viewing things. but hey thats 7+ years from now
