Hi, I'm new to cryptocurrencies and am in the process of researching exchanges to trade bitcoin for altcoins, however I feel really uneasy about uploading my passport, drivers license, utility bills, bank statements and a selfie with me holding my passport. Not only for obvious security reasons but also for governments to use my information and track my activity, i just find it really invasive.

But then I thought if one day I decide to cancel my account at an exchange that they would delete all of my personal information with it, however I've just discovered that Bitfinex retains all your details and sensitive documents for 6 years after account closure, and Poloniex I believe retains all your information indefinitely.

Are there any other options out there to trade altcoins with minimal verification? I don't mind uploading some form of ID, I guess that's fair providing I have their complete assurance that it would be deleted If I were to choose to close my account in the future.

Thanks.
You can use bittrex if you want, I have been using birrex for a year or two now and they have not required me for a verification at all, just keep your withdrawals below 2000$ and ou can use it without verification. There are also other exchanges that does not require verification if you want more anonymity like c-cex which I have used for a year too. You can withdraw and deposit here without giving personal info at all to them.

Bittrex only allow 1 BTC withdrawals a day for accounts without verification, or equivalent in other coins.

May be a problem for some who want to trade with higher volumes

You could try New Zealand exchange https://www.cryptopia.co.nz/. This exchange offers a number of smaller lesser known coins. Many are deeply speculative with low market caps and low adoption, but may be worth considering once you own some solid coins with strong technology and active development, .e,g. Monero, NEM, Bitcoin, Litecoin, etc.

I don't get any commission from them for recommending the exchange so there are no ulterior motives on my side.

I was uncomfortable with the exchange btc-e and recently they were shut down due to money laundering allegations. I would stay with exchanges based in the USA, England, Canada  or New Zealand where rule of law is expected to prevail.

Best of luck to you!

In the US, Coinbase would be the easiest one to start with.

You need to provide DL and link bank account or credit/debit card to the account..

Personally I'm not aware of any other easier and faster option.

I don't believe Bittrex asked me for anything of the sort.. then again I've been using it for like 3 years so I may not be remembering correctly..
