- Block 210000 marks the first halving: https://mempool.space/block/210000

- Block 420000 marks the second halving: https://mempool.space/block/420000

- Block 630000 marks the third halving: https://mempool.space/block/630000

- Block 840000 marks the fourth halving: https://mempool.space/block/840000

Anyway, it is true that each block where halving started is that the reward each block reward is halved like it happen on block 840000 although this time the fees become very high to many people. Well, it was explained that halving happen every 210000 blocks as others have said.

Someone/something's stealing the zeroes (highlighted in red by me in above citations)? Or your keyboard's key switch for the zero has little issuesthough highly unlikely with same effect for two individuals at the same time? Yes, I know, I'm little nitpicking but you guys might consider to correct for the stolen missing zeroes.  Wink Cheesy

Good catch, it was a typo, and copy pasted the next lines pasted the error to those lines...

But the linked block is correct, which is probably the most important one.

Didn't noticed right away after you highlighted in red what mistake that this forum member has made. I have changed my quote as it could be learned by others that will result in misinformation. Although, I changed it but the poster of this post should be the last person to change it though since I only quoted the post and I must have misread the total of zeros in that post. good find by the way  Grin.

It begins the moment the last block of the previous reward era is mined.

Block 0 marks Genesis: https://mempool.space/block/0

This marked the beginning of the first reward era.

Each halving event occurs after 210,000 blocks are mined.

So, considering block 0, after block 209,999 is mined it means that 210,000 blocks have been mined already, so the reward is halved for the next block. This block marks the beginning of the next reward era, in a similar way that Genesis marks the beginning of Bitcoin.

These are the blocks that mark halving events:

- Block 21000 marks the first halving: https://mempool.space/block/210000

- Block 42000 marks the second halving: https://mempool.space/block/420000

- Block 63000 marks the third halving: https://mempool.space/block/630000

- Block 84000 marks the fourth halving: https://mempool.space/block/840000

All of them are "golden" in mempool to mark its significance

You are right that it is golden in mempool but I think that's because of the changes that mempool did. If I remember it correctly, I didn't see anything like that before. Anyway, it is true that each block where halving started is that the reward each block reward is halved like it happen on block 84000 although this time the fees become very high to many people. Well, it was explained that halving happen every 210000 blocks as others have said.

Which block marks the halving? Which one do we celebrate? Is it 840000, 840001, or 839999?
We all already celebrated the block 840000 and that's the block which marked the new halving. At that block the reward of mining block was reduced to half and that's why it's the halving block and we all should consider it the mighty block of this year.

Which block marks the halving?

Is it the last block of the previous epoch or the first block of the new epoch? Is the number of first block 0 or 1?
A first block of new epoch is a halving block. A block before that block is a referenced block for a Bitcoin halving.

It's my opinion because it does not make sense if we use a block with same block subsidy and call it as a block of Bitcoin halving.

Block 839,999 is a referenced block.
Block 840,000 is a halving block.

I see this website, Bitcoin block reward halving countdown has a same approach for Bitcoin halving blocks.

It is like Christmas and Christmas Eve.

As per mempool,

It's block 840000 as other have said, and it's mine by ViaBTC.

The fees though, went off the roof after the halving itself,

Halving occurs for every 210,000 blocks mined so basically you know halving has occured on the first block of the new epoch which would be at zero and not 1 or not even before that.

We can honestly just celebrate whenever but I believe the block of 840,00 is when halving would be marked

840,000 will contain 3.125 not 6.25

also miners(asic owners) just hash a hash they dont collate transactions nor form the block template
mining POOL managers are the block template creators that need to ensure their attempts of 840,000 has 3.125 instead of 6.25

Does it begin when miners start working on block 840000 or when it is found?
According to what I have read in the past, block 840000 will be of 3.125 BTC in mining reward.

Note:
Block 839999 marks the end of the previous halving.
Block 840000 is the halving
Block 840001 marks the beginning of the new halve where block reward are cut into half

So what i explained above, is how I think it works, but I stand to be corrected if there is any miner in the room willing to elaborate more on this for our fullest understanding. Thank you
Block 840000 marks the beginning of the new halve where block reward are cut into half, not block 840001.

Does it begin when miners start working on block 840000 or when it is found?

Both replies above are correct, The block reward of 3.125 bitcoin starts on the 840000 block. To add confluence to what Cricktor explained above, the last halving began from block 630000 here is a tweet by F2Pool as they had a special message on the block 629999.

So even by a rough calculation of adding the 210000 blocks that separates the two halvings the last subsidy reward of 6.25 will stop at 839999 block.

Thank you

By this your calculation then what is the block reward for block 840000? Because apparently it will have its own reward. So I think with the above tweet from F2Pool this is 840000 is where the new 3.125 reward starts counting from

Halving will occur after block 839999. It will begin with block 840000.
Though I stand to be corrected, I thought we were told that "Halving" is the period which marks the moment wherby the reward for mining is cut into half? Alright, so at block 839999 it means we are still on the 3rd halve of Bitcoin, and not yet on the 4th halve, and it is at exactly block 840000 that the block rewards automatically cut into half, of which any miner that mines a block from 840001 onwards will be given half reward.

Thank you

The Genesis block, handcrafted with crypto passion by Satoshi Nakamoto, is block height 0. Computer nerds always start counting from zero.  Grin

And _act_ was quicker: first block with subsidy of 3.125BTC is block height 840,000 and this block subsidy will last in the 5th epoch until block height 1,049,999 (inclusive).

Does it begin when miners start working on block 840000 or when it is found?

Your question doesn't make sense to me. A block of height 840,000 is only accepted and valid when its coinbase transactions has a subsidy of max. 3.125BTC plus transaction fees. To crunch hashes on a valid block candidate, miners have to assemble a correct coinbase transaction and all the rest of the block before their ASICs start hashing, otherwise it's a waste of time, money, energy, sense.

Edit (as franky1 points out correctly):
Miners who mine in pools rely on the pool operator to assemble a proper block candidate and double hash variations of the 80-bytes block header.

Halving will occur after block 839999. It will begin with block 840000.

Does it begin when miners start working on block 840000 or when it is found?

I also want to point out that the bug in Bitcoin's difficulty adjustment is directly related to this question.

I would like to remind those of you who believe the answer is straightforward that most people believe that the 21st century began in the year 2000.
