Calculate ratio (expected hash rate, from https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison, but keep in mind that you will probably not reach the best values) / price and you can see which one is most profitable (excluding electricity costs)

Like many others have said, go with the ATI. I personally like the Nvidia cards better but for what your trying to do the ATI will work better

ATI 5970 is the best for hash but if you think about electricity consumption you may use 7970.

If you can't get cheap electricity then aim for free/very cheap GPU.
As long as you get more income than you pay electricity you can get a quick ROI.

By free GPU, I mean an old GPU that you were not using : consider it is a free GPU then everything you get from it is a benefit.

Definitely the ATi.

But needless to say, graphic cards are going to get obsolete very soon.

It's still worthwhile in some countries with cheap electricity rates or for those who have free power, but its true that they'd be better off mining altcoins at the moment.

When buying mining-hardware, always go for AMD/ATi. Their GPU-architecture is way better at all things related to numbers.

ATI > NVIDIA
Mine altcoins with GPU and exchange it to bitcoins.
GPU mining is far from being dead but you have to calculate your ROI based on the gain / hardware price / electricity cost

If you're using it for mining then ATI because Nvidia's cards are terrible at this. Also if you're mining then don't. Buy an ASIC or get free elctricity because GPU mining is practically dead.
