It really depend on a lot of things. For example, what currency you are using to trade and which country you are from plays a big part.

Anyway, from my personal perspective, I will say Coinbase is one of the best because it is a big company with thousands of customers already - trust. To add onto that, CoinBase offer one of the lowest fees as compared to others local exchange (CoinHako for example).

There are a few, but avoid poloniex and bittrex if you are adverse to bad customer service or aren't ready to have your account frozen at random. They may unfreeze later, at their leisure after weeks on end.

To be called the "best" will depend on your taste as different people have different views and experienced in different trading platforms.

To at least give you some idea/s, after hearing responses from this thread, take the one who got mentioned many times. Try it on actual and find the answer to your concern based on your own experience.

Alts involved? Poloniex, Bittrex, HitBtc etc. If you just want to buy or sell BTC for fiat you have Kraken, Bitstamp, Bitfinex and so on, see first if your country is supported. I'm not sure about Bitfury offering exchange services tho.
