i just double checked and Electrum 2.7.17 runs on win XP as i mentioned above and i still don't see why newer versions shouldn't.
the windows is Win XP SP3 with .Net Framework 4 installed on it installed on a virtual machine. i don't think it has anything special install other than what i just said.

and i still say go with Linux, you can dual boot to keep the WinXP or even boot the linux live from CD/DVD or if your hardware (bios?) supports it you can boot from a USB disk.

Thanks for your feedback.

Finally i got it working! latest version 2.8.2. The problem was connected with Net Framework... it seems that Net framework 3.5 or an earlier version is needed. I installed all of them and now it's working smootly.

I know that linux would be better, but as i've said changing from windows xp wasn't an option in this case.

Thanks everybody.

If I were to guess, the problem lies with the support for XP in the dependencies. Most has already dropped the support and Electrum can't run with them. AFAIK, anything above Electrum 2.6 won't work.

I have tried Electrum 2.5.4 but i still can't get Electrum working on this machine. Always the same error when launcing it. Really can't figure out what's the problem that prevent Electrum from loading correctly.

So strange.

The reason for choosing xp instead of a linux distribution as you have correctly suggested, is that others old programs that run only on windows xp have to be used on this pc.

I just tested 2.7.17 on this machine but it give me the same error as others versions.... something like "This installation is incorrect. A new installation of the program could fix this issue". The portable version instead gives another strange error that seems to me connected to pyton.

So probably this is a problem of this machine if you can run 2.7.17 on windows xp without problems. This is a fresh installed system with all avaible important updates done. Anyhow i didn't apply suggested updates.

Should i install something more on windows xp before installing Electum to get things work?

Thanks

Consider upgrading to Windows 7. Try if you can run the programs with compatibility mode in Windows 7.

i don't see any reason why any of them shouldn't run on windows XP although it is a weird question! the last one i tested was "electrum-2.7.17" on windows XP on a virtual machine and i had no problem.

may i ask why are you still using windows XP despite it being buggy.

and also why don't you install linux. there are many light versions that you can try. for example if you are a Ubuntu user (familiar with it) you can download Lubuntu and run it on any old system since it is a light OS (Xubuntu can work too)
there are other light ones such as Puppy linux which can be user fast on old systems.
