I'd say Audrey Hepburn. Few people know that she lived under Nazi occupation for five years, participated in the resistance as a child, had to give up ballet due to developmental issues caused by malnutrition, and witnessed people people slaughtered. In spite of having lost so much, she still became a major star and later retired in order to dedicate herself to humanitarian efforts.
