I see a lot of 0.01 BTC buys on http://bitcoinity.org/markets  who does that?

People who want to buy a dollar. Not everyone is American or European and that 0.01 means something different in another country.

For an example: The bots push the last price to one or the other side of the bid/ask.  If you are a seller you want the last to show the ask, if a buyer you want to sell .01 so the last is the bid.
If you have a big transaction which is off-exchange but set at the exchange price and you can sell 0.01 on exchange to set the last to the buy price you can buy your coins cheaper.  So if you are watching these, it could be a contrary indicator.

It's just change that gets mopped up. When you put bitcoins up for sale on an exchange, or when you want to buy them, there is not a 100% match between what is being sold and what is being purchased. So if I am selling 110.09 bitcoins, and someone puts in an order to buy 110 bitcoins, then .09 bitcoins is leftover for the next purchase. That's all that's going on.

Easy..  Run a Bot where you can set your Tick time to whatever you want(Instead of top of the Hour where all the manipulators play)..

Check out my Sig below for the best Trading bot around..  Made me $200 yesterday when BTC started to drop..    Grin  "Money For nothing and Chicks for Free"

I'd say bots like a lot of other people, there's a lot of fuss about this on the usual stock exchanges etc. too and people claim that it's knocking out the small time investors.

could be test transactions, but it seems like market manipulation

I should have said that was on mt.gox I just realized it was defaulted on bitcoinity. Bitstamp doesn't seem to have it happening there...
