So that's how satoshi came about? So it all began from some people decided it as the lowest fraction of Bitcoin and name it that? Honestly thats pretty cool, an unofficial official term created by the forum members!  Shocked

And now we are using it worldwide, especially with microtransactions, glad to have found out about this, never actually gave a serious thought about it before. Even Wiki does not have solid evidence about it. Smiley

A big thanks to OP for bringing this up and letting us know about this essential knowledge. Everyone here should know about this piece of history about BTC. Bitcointalk forum has given allot of things to the crypto currencies community and this is also one of those important things.

I guessing that someone really close to the man, coined the unit "satoshi", obviously in his honor. We all know that he invented bitcoin, but I don't think he will just used his name for "one hundred millionth part of a bitcoin". People who are very closed to him in the beginning could have given him, but the exact identify of that person is lost already.

Surely the inventor himself was the one who came up with this term, that my assumption. Surely it's written somewhere in the whitepaper. Maybe if you go through the white you might come across the right answer.

At least do a bit of research before spamming the  thread with our stupid assumptions
The whole discussion is here:

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/more-divisibility-required-move-the-decimal-point-3311

At that point satoshi was no longer active on bitcointalk.

Just to honor the maker of it Satoshi Nakamoto, but as to who first used it we do not know.  Maybe the managment, president, the committee all agreed to use his name because he made the biggest sacrifice or effort in creating the first digital currency.  Whatever the reason or whoever used it, we should and they should be attached satoshi in the bitcoin world.

That's an interesting question, I believe it'd be more of a community oriented effort provided that it's been accepted by the community widely.
Yes it seems satoshi term was first coined by this guy here https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.50647
100 million satoshis = 1 bitcon and everybody agreed on that back in 2011.

I guess it's not coined by Satoshi Nakamoto himself because the same person who had developed will not call his name in his invention. So probably there's any third party who had set the name in his respect. Anyway the technology has be invented by Satoshi and he had clearly published it on white paper and we all know that clearly that it's Nakamoto that had invented and published and mande available for public. But the term satoshi and it's value had been coined later or may be Satoshi himself had made all these term and set the value that is 100000000 satoshi is equal to 1 btc. Or could be any reason for the same and we human could predict anything but only written and proved documents and materials could give us the correct answer for your question.

We know that Satoshi Nakamoto coined the termed "Bitcoin", but who coined the term "Satoshi" for the one hundred millionth part of a bitcoin.
I had read somewhere that it was in honor of bitcoin's creator in 2010, but who first started using the word ?
Just asking out of curiosity Wink

It was definitely to honor Satoshi Nakamoto. I don't think it was decided by a single person though.

I imagine it happened like a member suggested it on a sort of forum, then most members liked it.  Grin
Haha that would be something, right? Maybe the thread got thousands of comments all suggesting to that name. Who knows, maybe that did happen and we don't even know!  Shocked Wink

Why should we care about that? Changing this now will just cause confusion. In Language some terminology starts on it's own and the community decides to accept it. If you say, I "Googled" something, people just know what you talking about, because it is so widely used by the community. Have you considered what would happen if we will need to sub divide a Satoshi? What will we call 0.000000001 then? Satoshi is not around to name the new units, so the community needs to decide. ^smile^

the question is who was the first person to betray us and say satoshi is "one hundred millionth part of a bitcoin" instead of saying bitcoin is "one hundred million times of a satoshi". Cheesy

you see at code level there is nothing called bitcoin. there is only satoshi, it is a int64_t if i am not mistaken and then everything else is just user interface.

Satoshi Nakamoto did not himself coin the lowest fraction of a bitcoin. I guess from this is where the term came into existence, https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/bitcent-3574

Bitcent, microbitcent, millicent, satoshi

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/more-divisibility-required-move-the-decimal-point-3311

Before this thread you can't find Satoshi being used to refer the lowest fraction of bitcoin on this forum.

I am not sure who really put the name of Satoshi into that unit of Bitcoin but must be some of his own associates or a verified fan/follower of the man. Anyway, this was a nice name and it is full of historical value in honor of the man who conceptualized Bitcoin and really make it to the market. Thousands are right now enjoying the benefits of cryptocurrency all because of one man.

We have many things we should thanks Nakamoto Satoshi for.
