Vladimir Putin? Since there's nothing directly similar to a congress in Russia and there are not many restrictive constitutional laws one could say that he's in a position of absolute power.

Markos Lemakasidion, the G.E. emperor (here, akin to a constitution).

Probably Obama, USA is still nº1 no matter what, but Putin can play a big role as a destabilizing agent if he allies with other nutjobs like Kim Yung Un and so on.

I don't think the American heads of state are the true power houses of the USA. They come and go. They succumb to party politics and just politics in general. I suspect that behind the scenes are the most powerful. Putin on the other hand, and his longevity in office makes me think that he's a pretty powerful man.

Central bankers, because they have not only managed to convince people that they are required in society and are doing good in the world, they actually make the people they install into political parties think they're in charge, when of course, they actually aren't and the rest of the public believe it too.
Central bankers aren't politicians.
I'll shock you with this one, I think the president of the United States is the most powerful politician in the world.  They have the most powerful force in the history of the world at their command along with the biggest economy in history at their command.

China is the biggest economy, isn't it? Furthermore, how can you say for sure that the U.S. is the most powerful state in the world from a military point of view? Can it be destroyed? Yes, it can, there are at least two countries which can do just that (with a vengeance), so it can't be the most powerful by definition.

All we know for sure is that the U.S. national debt is the largest on the planet.

Being able to be destroyed doesn't mean you aren't the most powerful. With nuclear weapons, there are many more countries than two that can destroy America (Britain, France, India, Pakistan, Russia, China), but anyone capable of destroying would be destroyed themselves, so they can't be more powerful by virtue of this. With this nuclear stalemate, ability to project traditional military muscle is an adequate measure of a nation's power, and no other country can subject the rest of the world to its military like the US. Just look at the headlines in the last 15 years. We're damned near everywhere and exclusively so.

Yes, it does, period. The first four countries wouldn't be able to destroy the U.S. completely. They could possibly bring some serious damage but not to the point it would threaten the existence of the U.S. as such. And it still remains to be seen if China could actually do that. In respect to traditional military muscle it is rather a matter of belligerence, not military supremacy. Whenever the U.S. engaged with more or less serious opponents, they either lost militarily (Vietnam backed by the USSR) or had to withdraw (Korea backed by the USSR and China).

Do you really think that if America attacked China or Russia with conventional weapons (no nuking allowed), they would win?

China is the largest economy from a purchase parity perspective. Economists argue whether this means they're actually larger. I could be convinced either way.

Isn't the EU the largest economy? Doesn't mean much when each country is pushing its own interests first and China's growth is higher. But still. And I agree with others who said bankers and other groups are the most powerful. Politicians don't act alone. Even dictators don't. And when they try they often get replaced. Much harder to do with other powerful business groups. So I'm not sure the question even makes much sense.

I don't think Obama is the most powerful politician.

He's the biggest target but can he really persuade people to do whatever he wants? No.

Well? Isn't he the guy just dropping drone strikes all over the foreign countries?

He may be able to persuade some people, but not Iran or North Korea.

I believe they are the most powerful leaders today.

It hard  to define who is the most powerful politician.
As president of American, Obama has the most powerful to effect international affairs, but his power was restricted by the congress in his own country
For dictator, they power is almost infinite in their own country, as Kim Jong-un, but out of north Korea, he almost has no power.

Yes, Obama as the POTUS is likely the most powerful man in the international affairs, but it still remains to be seen whether he is the most cunning and crafty among other powerful politicians out there? My point is that how effectively he uses his power and escapes the possibility of this power being used against him and the U.S.

Xi Jinping leads the world's most populous nation and likely owns the most of the US debt.

What do you define as 'power'? I think any president or leader of a country has a lot of power and obviously one of the Superpower countries like USA/Russia/China probably have the biggest power persey, but I think the ones who wield it and starts wars left right and center are the biggest tyrants and therefor powerful, but maybe you have a different definiton of powerful.

The ones that scream the loudest aren't always the most powerful (dog that barks doesn't bite).
If you're asking who is the most influential i.e. can force their views on others, I'd say Putin. He knows how to play the political scene and how to keep himself glued to his chair.
