Carbon emissions are not only caused by bitcoin mining. When you read this post or just surf the internet, it also contributes carbon dioxide to the electricity consumption needed to turn on a PC, laptop, or charge a cellphone.

global warming due to carbon emissions is a shared responsibility, not just the bitcoiner who is responsible. planting trees is a good idea, but it would be better not to consume electricity using fossil energy. companies must use environmentally friendly energy and not cooperate with companies that use fossil energy as the main energy source.

This requires high awareness

Let's not over complicate the issue, because the misinformation spread by people with hidden agendas has prompted Elon Musk to over react on this whole "Carbon" footprint and electricity used for mining. If more people switch to renewable resources and the real statistics on mining farms using renewable energy for mining was released, then this would not have been an issue.

Planting more trees, will increase water consumption and water is a scarce resource in many countries too, so it solves one problem and it creates other problems.  Roll Eyes

Playing trees is always a good thing. There are even sites online that will give you free seeds for all sorts of stuff. Everyone should be their own little Johnny Appleseed and help Mother Nature out when possible. Planting trees, saving the bees, food banks, fighting disease, all great things to spend your time and money on.

My point : if you're a bitcoiner you are probably rich (and in 10 years you may not have to work anymore) so you can afford to plant a few trees !
A 100 trees is enough to offset 1 bitcoin, on reforestaction.com that's 300 USD !!!

Although the idea is cool, it's based on some misconceptions. Imho most bitcoiners are not rich. Also by holding bitcoin, no electricity is used. Also it's the electric companies who should be careful of their carbon footprint and if need be reflect that in the electricity price.

But I can proudly tell that I did plant myself about 10 trees and, unlike whatever website I am sure that they are alive and well and also won't get cut down in a couple of years.

I sometimes wonder if those who are blue in the face for screaming about "bitcoin carbon emission" (which is not even close to reality) have ever in their lives talked 5 seconds a bout other industries that are not only polluting our air but waters and are generally terrible for the environment?
Interestingly enough most of the public figures who talk about bitcoin and pollution have never talked about anything remotely related to environment before.

Agreed. We need to ignore these losers. The self-proclaimed environmentalists never talk about the carbon footprint of producing banknotes and coins. These people have run out of reasons to make their complaints against Bitcoin and that is the reason why they are concentrating so much on the so called carbon footprint of Bitcoin. And people like Elon never talk about the Carbon emissions that his factories produce. Please check this:

Thanks to its explosive expansion in China and a planned car plant in India, Tesla is in the process of not just increasing the total sum of its emissions — a pretty inevitable consequence of growth in our current carbonised world — but increasing the amount of pollution each of its vehicles generates, too.

We should ask Elon how his ELECTRIC vehicles work..? If Bitcoin mining is using the electricity created from Coal then what his cars using..? I literally felt sorry for his dumbness when he said that.. He said something about Chinese coal mines and electricity generated by it used by Bitcoin miners.. Only Bitcoin miners use that electricity..?

What we really need in my opinion is the total removal of fossil fuels as a source of energy to produce electricity because planting trees takes time while removing the pollutants, we can see the positives really fast and we also have to be really hostile towards people that are cutting trees, people need to know that there will be blood if they continue cutting trees illegally.

Planting trees and claiming that it will be good for the planet is nothing but a publicity stunt. Planted forests are not as effective as natural forests in combating climate change. And unfortunately, natural forests are being destroyed at an alarming rate across the world and being replaced with plantations and pastures. If we want to combat climate change, then please stop these publicity stuns and try to save the natural forests. Deforestation rates have hit record highs in countries such as Brazil and Colombia recently.

300 dollar per bitcoin and now your bitcoin is carbon neutral, why not ?
There is nothing wrong with planting trees but even if everyone who owns Bitcoin would do that there would be no proof to measure and confirm this, and it's not important what we do.
We need to understand that all this climate change global warming propaganda is not only targeting Bitcoin but it targets everything else including Bitcoin.
Believe it or not, many countries will BAN all diesel and gasoline cars in their countries by year 2030 so you better think about that and what people you choose to run your countries.

I just saw the news how even US Army, who is probably one of the biggest pollution and destruction factory in the world, is also talking about this subject

Looks like Bitcoin is just a tiny spot in this global agenda, but that tiny spot can ruin their plans and take away control from central banks and corrupt governments, and that is the reason why Bitcoin was created afteral.

We will reap the benefits of planting trees right now in 50 years or so so I think it will be worthless for the present but it will be helpful for the future generations, my take on this is that we have to stop polluting our oceans because that's where most of the CO2 are absorbed by ocean planktons that dies because of pollution, they are responsible for around 90 percent of carbon absorption. Also a much better alternative is the total abolition of fossil fuels as energy source.

That is a lot but it is far from the truth.

Trying to measure Bitcoin's derived carbon footprint (as noted in the earlier reply; isn't directly) is fundamentally skewed. You cannot assume electricity generation to be equal, there are tons of renewable energy plants around the world that Bitcoin miner relies on. Why do Bitcoiners have to assume the responsibility of offsetting the carbon footprint? Are companies penalized enough for polluting the environment? Do they provide the same amount of utility as Bitcoin?

Citing Reuters "Bitcoin production is estimated to generate between 22 and 22.9 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions a year, or between the levels produced by Jordan and Sri Lanka, a 2019 study in scientific journal Joule found."

That is a distortion of the facts. Bitcoin mining burns no carbon and produces no CO2. Bitcoin mining is 100% powered by electricity, just like Tesla's electric vehicles.

No way 100% or even 10% or maybe even 1% of Bitcoiners would bother to plant trees or even donate to an organization that does it. Any efforts that rely on volunteering large masses of people, like "all Bitcoin holders" are doomed to fail.

Bitcoin gets attacked for its energy consumption because no one talks about how much emissions Christmal lights create, or air conditioners, or cruise liners, so Bitcoin became a convenient scapegoat for the media.

The point is that Bitcoin is not the sole contributor to global warming. This is a long standing issue and tree planting should be a priority regardless of the crypto stance on this topic.

People need to understand that not doing anything is just as bad as contributing. Many planet activists and scientists warred us of the importance of maintaining our planet if this is not a big shout for that I don't know what is?

The later we leave this problem the bigger and more difficult to solve will become.

I think you've mistaken a "real" BTCitcoiner from a hodler; The latter one sees and uses BTCitcoin as an investment asset while the former one uses BTCitcoin the way it was meant to be used.

Cool idea Wink

Hi guys,

Citing Reuters "Bitcoin production is estimated to generate between 22 and 22.9 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions a year, or between the levels produced by Jordan and Sri Lanka, a 2019 study in scientific journal Joule found."

Divide by 18M bitcoin and you get 1277 kg/btc/year   ( the equivalent of driving 6388 km with a modern car).

You can't deny that is quite a lot !!

We are the lucky ones, we can afford to do something good Smiley  I just had my bitcoin trees planted and it feels really good!

Cheers,
