It's a shame if posts are being deleted without explanation in such a way that even senior members can't understand what's going on.
Imagine being a newbie, stumbling into a thread that you want to read, only for it to go 404 when you hit F5. I'd be hella confused.

Other than that, I think that the incentive is good but info tends to sometimes be lost in the forum format. I would feel better editing a more permanent page like the bitcoin wiki, and then responding to questions in the B&H section by linking to relevant articles.

Sometimes I feel that I'm micturating into the wind with these projects. We ought to be encouraging newcomers to Bitcoin and Crypto, but sometimes it seems a battle, especially on boards like the mining ones. I got stroppy yesterday, and gave 50 merits to this newbie - https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/--5226442 , and I hope that bad moderation won't discourage him from being a productive member of Bitcoin Talk.

Thanks to the guys who are expressing a renewed interest in the Fit to Talk project, and I will try to work out a way to restore registrations, without having to spend hours getting rid of spam and spammers.

I'm going to have one more go at starting some newbie discussion topics on the beginners' board. As there hasn't been any comment on the identifier for the project, I'm going to use [D-8]. I would be grateful if the mods could leave these threads on the beginners' board. If they don'r get enough replies, then they will just drop down in the index, there is no need to destroy the project by moving them. It would be good if a few senior members could join this initiative, especially if one of them is a mod.

I think the first one will be a discussion about the block generation interval, and I'll start that a bit later if it is thought to be a good idea.

Thanks for those generous 5 merits you gave me on the other thread!!

This project sounds good, I bet soon there will be many sr members willing to contribute, we can see a lot of newbies trying to find ways to thrive, learn, and discover more about bitcoin on this forum.

I don't think that the project needs to focus on Core wallets solely, it's just my personal belief that they are the best way to hold Bitcoin long term. I have an account/wallet with CoinBase, and I have never had any problems with that. I just use it for a bit of scalping, and I move coins into a HODL wallet in Core if the price moves against me. Core is fine if you have the storage, and a cheap Internet connection, but I wouldn't use it if I was restricted to a mobile or a tablet.

The idea would be for 5 or 6 members to form a club, and they would start and maintain threads,
You can count me in. I have much interest in learning bitcoin and its related technical stuff. You can check out my threads I have written so far. Almost all of these were basic though; I have started here from zero knowledge, hence, the basic.

I am agree with 1miau; creating educational giveaway. I guess fund will not be a problem. There are a lot of members who are willing to donate for such kind of giveaway. I can donate a little as well.

Although you are focusing on newbie, I reckon that a lot of high rank members here don't know basic of the BTC and its technical. For instance; HCP has suggested some of the topics which I guess most of the members have no idea about. If we continue giveaway; just like the other one created by 1miau, we can attract some newbies as well and they will certainly have some research (force them to read the tutorials) before responding in the giveaway.

since you want to focus on bitcoin core and start discussions, one topic that comes to mind would be pros and cons of using bitcoin core as your wallet. for example two thing about core is that you have no option to create a physical backup (like printing the seed on a paper) and all you have is a digital backup. and there is no easy way of using many features such as multi-signature schemes.

How about an educational giveaway?  Smiley
Normal educational stuff can be very boring sometimes (in Germany we would call it "dry" Cheesy) and a little incentive of a few sats can help to encourage people informing about that topic and participate finally. Most Newbies don't have much BTC and if we are generous, we can give them an opportunity to earn some (maybe their first BTC) while they'll learn more about Bitcoin and Blockchain in that giveaway.

A few weeks ago I made a giveaway where people had to guess Bitcoin's first block in 2020 and good explanations were also rewarded with Merit:

[FINISHED] Educational giveaway | guess first Bitcoin Block in 2020 [9.5 mBTC]

I tried to cover the following points:

...
I’ve chosen that special type of giveaway to encourage users doing research about Bitcoin’s block creation process. Predicting a block mined at a specified time can be anticipated to a certain degree when you know about the factors how block generation process is done. Important questions related to this giveaway:
- How many blocks are generated per hour?
- What does mining difficulty mean?
- What’s a mining difficulty adjustment?
- When are such adjustments done?
- How is BTC price affecting miners and therefore also mining difficulty and block generation process?

But I would open it also for higher ranks. My example has shown that much valuable knowledge came from experienced users and Newbies had learned from that.

Maybe you have different interesting ideas, which topics can cover a good giveaway.

I don't really want to write tutorials, as there are quite a few good and well written ones already. What I would like is for newer members to read the tutorials, and to discuss them with other new members in a thread. The interaction would be interesting, and especially so if local issues and restrictions are introduced. For example, it may not be possible for most Venezuelans to maintain a core wallet. but they shouldn't be deprived of access to Bitcoin because of this.

maybe you could add some sort of tag to the topics you start

This was really the reason I started this thread. Pretty obviously one of the mods has a problem with my projects, and sometimes this has resulted in my taking a holiday from the forum for a few days. I do tend to have fairly firm views, and my post about wallets is an example. The suggestion that a discussion about wallets would benefit beginners is really good, but I tend to diss everything other thn a core wallet, so it would need to be started by somebody else.

The idea would be for 5 or 6 members to form a club, and they would start and maintain threads, and these could be on boards other thn the beginners of course. If one of those could be a mod, then tht would be perfect. A member who doesn't have English as a first language would be useful as well. I own D-8.net, and at the the moment, that resolves to Talk Merit. I could use [D-8] as a simple tag, and list the supporters on the site to make it easy for members to check the legitimacy of starters claims to membership.

Good thanks for clarifying you only want  a core wallet.

Then  make a project  about core wallet's.

Linux vs windows vs mac os vs rasp pi.

I  would help  to teach on that.

for instance  some thing like  buying a used lenovo m700 tiny  drop in a 1tb ssd  and setup a core wallet.

maybe you could add some sort of tag to the topics you start to solve the issue with "going to technical". like [beginner], [intermediate], [advanced]. or [techlvl=1], [techlvl=5] where lower levels cover basic topics such as fees, wallets, transactions, change, confirmation,... and higher levels cover more advanced topics like PoW, ECDSA, Schnorr, Taproot, LN,... and maybe if you focus on educational part rather than giveaway part they stop being moved.
because i think there is nothing wrong with that and in fact i would love to see more technical topics specially about new things such as lightning network, i would be a beginner in that myself and i am too busy to start researching and prefer reading a simplified short topic about it.

Perhaps you are attempting to go a bit too technical for "B&H"? Based on my experiences in that board, your suggested topics might be too low level for the audience.

Maybe try focusing on high level topics first, that still require some thought and effort on behalf of the respondents. As an example of the things suitable for the target audience, maybe consider getting newbies to investigate things we see repeatedly asked by newbies:

Why did my wallet address change? (address re-use/deterministic wallets)
Why does my transaction spend 0.001 BTC when I only tried to send 0.0003 BTC? (spending whole UTXOs)
Why does my transaction to send 0.0003 BTC also send 0.0007 to some unknown address? (change)
This guy gave me an address with 0.1 BTC in it, how do I spend it? (watching wallets vs 'normal' wallets)
Why do I have to download 280+gigs for Bitcoin Code? (blockchain fundamental, need to start at the beginning to verify)

Basic stuff? sure... but, in my opinion, having a solid grasp of the basic fundamentals is required before you can start asking about orphan blocks and soft forks. They need to learn to walk before they can run! Wink

How about a hardware wallet vs browser wallet vs exchange vs bt core primer.

I couldn't support that - I'm a hard core Bitcoiner - if you will excuse the pun. Smiley

I think that is a great idea I did start a topic about the bitcoin client and how some of the features of bitcoin like block reward and some other interesting things like OP codes and the Genesis block.

I have been super busy with some other projects I have going right now and have let the topic slip some what but would love to know more about your idea and how I could help.

Well all the ones I think up seem to be considered as too difficult - like the one that tried to get them to research SHA256. It want to be something that gets away from the "Bitcoin is digital gold" or "Datoshi was an alien" type of thing. Some of the things that I think might be useful to discuss are -
Orphan blocks
Soft forks
How transactions are packed in blocks
What happens to rejected transactions

Obviously there are loads more similar topics, but I'm not sure where to draw the line for the beginners' board.

Maybe if half a dozen of us start a project for newbies, the destructive mod who keeps moving my threads will leave it alone, and we can actually try to start a couple of educational projects. I've got the sMerits to award, all I need is some encouragement and some 3M postit stickers to stop the threads migrating.
